The battery life on this mouse is measured in months. If that's too big a hassle then I don't know what to tell you.
I own this mouse. This is my first wireless mouse after many generations of wired Logitech mice (mx510, mx518, G5, G302, G303, G402, G502). I love it and I'm never going back.

I got the wired version by mistake last time. Glad I could scoop this wireless version now.

anyone use this as a regular mouse (not gaming)? Been wanting to pick up a new one with some function buttons that I can set up for random things. Tried the MX Master or whatever it's called and that thing is MASSIVE

I use this when I work from home and it works great. I am on the small end of Medium glove size and this mouse is perfect for me.

Haha in the same boat here and just bought the Amazon deal for the Logitech. Have an MX Master 2 and it's way too big and heavy.

You can set the middle button behind the mouse as a modifier (G-key). Doesn't let you do much besides changing the thumb buttons to do something else while held down (e.g. volume up / down, key macros, etc). The Logitech Gaming Software app options aren't as advanced as what you can do with the MX Master / MX Anywhere with the Logi Options app.

If you don't play games, I highly recommend getting an MX Anywhere 3 instead. I also moved off an MX Master because it's too big. I just use this G305 for games and an MX Anywhere 3 for work.

The G305 doesn't seem to have the ability to set a "Gesture button" like on the MX mice where you can hold down a key and swipe up/down/left/right. It just has a simple modifier/layer key you can assign.

I use this as a regular mouse, but it's not my preferred one because the wheel doesn't tilt left and right, so that's 2 "buttons" that you don't have. I use this one specifically for work because the button customizations are stored on the mouse itself and doesn't require software installation on the machine. That's important because my work computer is locked down and I'd never be able to install the Logitech software on it.
The one I use for my personal computer is the M510.

Lightspeed is much less convincing when you have to change a AA battery. I'd say either stick with wired or go all-in with the g pro and charging mat.
