I know a lot of people talk smack about the S, but man, I love mine, I'm not one to pixel count, so as long as the game I'm playing is 1080p, I'm fine, looks great on my LG CX, especially when the games are still kicking at 60fps or better.
Also travels well, I'm able to throw it in my bag next to my laptop when I travel and it's great for hotel downtime.
I have no problem with the S's performance. If that were the only difference, I'd already own one. My problem is the measly storage. 512GB, only 364GB left after OS. When a lot of AAA games run over 100GB, that's gonna fill up real quick. You can remedy this by getting a storage expansion card, but that brings the total cost to more than the Series X.
If you're a very casual gamer who only plays one or two games at a time, the Series S may be a good buy. But I'm pretty casual, don't have a ton of games, and I've been struggling with the 500GB storage limit on my PS4 for a couple years now. It can only be worse with newer games.
Its Costco. They are a warehouse retailer. They have paid members and they purchase in bulk. People pay membership fees for access to prices below MSRP. Those membership fees help pay for things being sold under MSRP.

As someone else said, when we start seeing truly next gen games you'll start seeing a bigger gap between the XSX and XSS, and may eventually reach a point where games "technically" run on XSS like Cyberpunk does on the PS4.
One of the newer games drops to 576p on the S. Oof. Forget 4k, 1080p, or even 720p in that game.
Would be ok for a kid or 2nd console only, except the poor storage. but even that kid is going to know he's got 2nd best.
But the real problem is a digital Series X would be 399. There's not enough manufacturing cost savings to justify the S. Microsoft has said they lose more money on it too, so they're subsidizing it to even get to it's current imo poor value proposition.
Its a great casual gamer or second console. I'd definitely prefer more storage and drive but as far as raw performance it has enough.
I am replacing secondary XB1X (my primary is XSX) with it and just looking at usage (fast boot, quick resume, fast load times) and power consumption perspective it is a huge win.
Not sure how you came up with $399 digital XSX but that would be a true loss leader for MSFT just like digital PS5 is for Sony. I suspect that only next gen console which is actually profitable or close to be profitable is XSS. All others are probably sold at a loss with PS5 digital toping that list.
You weren't trying to explain this category? Someone said he was surprised it was selling under MSRP, and you went into an explanation of how Costco gets people prices under MSRP, and it wasn't intended to explain video games?
no, it wasn't intended to explain video games. I was dryly trying to explain costco to someone who didn't seem to understand it. Or retail in general. Not really video game specific.
Good deal, especially since there are people still trying to scalp this thing, still. I was considering it, but I just checked the Game Pass Library and there are only 5 or 6 games more on console than on PC. A few games I am not interested in playing. Not a bad choice if you don't have a gaming PC already.

It was intended to explain video games, though it's true that it wasn't specific to video games.
It's OK to be wrong. We all do it sometimes. It's really easy to say something you don't mean online trying to make a point. I try to learn from it and get better.

No, it really was to explain Costco. Unfortunately for you, you can't really characterize my intent better than I can. I don't mind admitting I'm wrong. I do it several times a day. I think dry humor is lost on some readers here. I was giving an explanation of what Costco is to someone who seemed to be a acting like they don't understand it. Basically trying to explain Costco to someone who lives under a rock. So, again, not referring to video games specifically but how retail works.

See, nothing about video games. It's full of general terms because it's a general statement on how membership stores generally work.
All this being said, I'm tempted to buy a series S for my garage. I have x series in the living room and wouldn't mind having the option to play in garage while smoking things. Storage could be frustrating for AAA games, but isn't a deal breaker for a secondary system. (hint: this is about video games)
Also, the Pittsburgh Steelers will finish last in their division. (about football, not video games)

Your quote that starts with 'it's Costco,' do you remember what that was in reply to? Was it replying to something about a video game console? I think it was. I'm interested to see how you spin a reply to someone talking about the price of a video game console to not be explaining the price of a video game console.

So, again simply referring to how costco works for someone who seemed to be interested in how this item is under MSRP. So I explained how it's under MSRP. Never commenting on the item itself. There were two obvious variables, certainly more for those inclined, to comment on for why it's under MSRP. We could talk about the item or the business model of the place selling the item. Since I figured the thread would go on about the item and the perceived value of the item, I thought I'd cover the retailer.
Andy, is this what people do in Florida? Don't you have votes to count, a neighborhood to watch or a building to inspect?
Can I use this to stream to or from my PC in bedroom to my living room where the Series S would be? This would be with Gigabit ethernet.
I'd ideally want to be able play PC games on the Series S via 1080p stream via XB controller.
If this was possible, it would be worth it for me instead of using an Nvidia shield.
For those in search of a Series X, I was able to snag one early in the morning off of Target's website.
5 a.m. eastern time.
A few stores within range had very minimal stock 1-2 each.
You have to order online for in store pickup. That's the only way to aquire one at Target.
Best of luck.
