BTU doesn't compare when it comes to single hose portable AC's. You simply wont get the same performance out of a single hose AC as you would a Window unit since you're dumping some of your cool indoor air outside. So yes a 14000 BTU model is probably needed for your 550 sqft room.

Or buy a dual hose unit. I have a Whynter dual hose that I've used for years. Dual hose units recirculate your indoor air, making them more efficient. There is still an efficiency penalty because of the hoses. But its much lower than the single hose unit.

Window units are better, but not everyone can have them.

Midea is one of the largest OEMS for AC's. So many brands are really Midea's.

Would this be strong enough for a 550 square foot room? I had an 8000 btu lg, and I returned it. It was not strong enough so order a media 14000 btu model but it very expensive, it's coming Monday. The Media 14000 btu model is also sold by toshiba under there name, but its built by media.

Unless you only plan on only using this twice a year a dual hose unit will pay for itself. Or just spend less and get more efficiency from a window unit.

This is exactly why I returned the LG, I did alot more research and learned about the inaccurate btu stats, so midea had the features I wanted, wifi with google, dual hose vent, 14000 btu which is really around 10000/12000 btu, I also like how the hose comes out vertically vs horizontal and I wanted it in black, the toshiba branded one comes only in white if u want that. What also interested me was the variable speed inverter, its supposed to be more efficient and waste less electricity. I'm glad to hear midea is on of the biggest, I hope it's reliable.

I second this. Dual hose is the way to go if window unit is not an option. I have used a single hose and now a double hose Haier unit, and the difference is night and day.

Midea makes a Dual Hose, inverter portable AC for $599. If you MUST go with a portable vs a window, this is probably the most efficient unit in terms of both cost to run, and ability to cool. They also combined the two hoses into a single larger piece which is kind of cool

No. That's too big of a space. With this size you can expect to cool a 300sqft room at best. Like others have said, buy a dual hose. I have a whynter 12k btu unit running nonstop for a year and it works amazingly well for a 400sqft apt. It uses 1.2kwh of electric power (measured by killawatt in FL's heat)so it's not the worst I've seen but it could be better.

The one you linked to is the 12,000 btu model, I went with the 14000 for 699.00, I saw it for a little less at 617.00 but Amazon has to adjust the price for me, for some weird reason the one priced at 617.00 wouldnt ship to my address... its coming in today. Can't wait!

I bought the 12000BTU version with 349.99 $ last summer just in case power outrage in CA due to extremely heat, but hasn't opened the box yet, so don't know how efficient it is. I may not use it forever, but I feel safe now because I have two little baby at home.
