Lower end Makita models also use plastic, like XML02 and XML05 models.

But actually, plastics can be a plus for residential home owners depending on their yard size because you are looking at a significant weight advantage at a ~40lb machine vs ones that weighs 60-80lbs+. Maneuverability is actually a quite underrated attribute vs a metal deck.

I'm a makita fan boy but even I'll admit ego makes better lawn equipment than makita. But makita does make quality products and the batteries alone make this a deal.

Edit: I thought the $374 price was for four 5.0 batteries not 4.0. It is pricey to me.

Why is the EGO brand so much cheaper?

Makita is generally on the pricier side of tools but the quality is top notch. I do know a lot of people with EGO and Ryobi that like their mowers so it's really hard to pull the trigger with prices like this. Not even a dual blade design for the 21".

I don't know about this. In my opinion the top tier makita equipment is better than EGOs. Not going to say the same about the single battery LXT 18v lawn equipment or lower tier tools.

For instance the XML08 mower on the 36v platform, I would say quality, performance, and heavy duty-ness is better than EGOs. Same with the 36v string trimmer. Cant say the same about Makita's other mowers. Which is a feat since it's a 36v system versus the EGO's 56v system.

Have been using the 18" XML03CM1 for about 6 months, and it's been great! I'm in a Makita ecosystem, so I sold the 4.0aH batteries and the charger to lower my out of pocket cost.

I thought about getting the 21" self -propelled model, but XML03CM1 is pretty light by itself, so the savings (plus the extra calories burned) pushed me against it.

Depends on the mower. There are EGO mowers with similar price tags. I do like the Makita has a metal deck.

Makita OPE is regularly used commercially. Those plastic decks on EGOs are fine for homeowners but you won't find them used commercially. Makita is overkill for homeowners but some folks buy more than they need (I am guilty often of wasting money on quality that is not needed)

Does EGO have an auger yet? I might have to go with Ryobi for my yard tools if they don't.

I can relate to that. I watched reviews of the Makita lawn mower, trimmer and the blower (all 36V platforms) before buying them, and they were all done by professionals. However, they were all purchased with deals, or I sold the batteries/charges to get them at the 18V counterparts' price range.

I agree plastic is fine for most homeowners who will mow once a week. But it is not meant for repeated wear and tear

Also want to point out that many folks have Makita batteries and tools so having additional batteries is a plus. I have the Toro 60v recycler that came with a 6ah. I have a 1/2 acre and I needed to go out and buy another battery. If my lawn goes 2 weeks w/o a cut I sometimes have to get a partial charge out of a battery to finish my lawn. I will point out that I do not let my batteries discharge 100% to help extend their life. If I had to do over again I would consider a Makita since I have some Makita tools and batteries already and would never be short power to mow my lawn. If you have a smaller yard not an issue but for anyone who insists going battery but has a .75 or 1+ acre lawn then multiple batteries are a must and need to be taken into account. Milwaukee needs to get their act together and put out a mower already. License toro products and slap m18 battery housing and be done with it
