So in my video on how to make an LED Top Hat, you see my tree is still up. That has 700 WS2811 pixels controlled by a Raspberry Pi Zero, Falcon Pi Player software, and a 12V power supply. Spent 4 days converting it from just basic white LED to clipping all the pixels on each tip. Wife loves it so much she said to keep it up all the time. Not going to argue... I love Christmas and lighting!

They aren't better. They are easier. People are paying for convenience.
Your average consumer isn't going to buy an esp device flash it with WLED, solder wires to the data pins, buy a power supply, hook it up, figure out an enclosure. Take the time to learn WLED and configure it. In addition to learning xLights.
