The Verizon firmware may not support eSIM / dual SIM capabilities, but if you can truly unlock the bootloader, you could put on the non-Verizon firmware or a third-party ROM (I personally like PixelDust).

The VZW variant is physically the same as the unlocked variant, it's just the software that says what can and cannot be used (which is the reason I use PixelDust, so I can use tethering without the phone asking for permission from the carrier).

My Pixel 3 (unlocked) uses WiFi calling on Red Pocket with the CDMA-V (Verizon) network.

This is my concern. It's technically capable, but I advised a friend to buy one of these back when they were ($150?) and he said Red Pocket wouldn't let him use it with VZW, that he had to purchase an AT&T SIM for $5 to keep his balance. The phone couldn't pass provisioning.

Unless someone with actual experience with this actual phone chimes in to say otherwise, this makes a kind of sense: Verizon still uses a whitelist and the IMEI / MEID fails because the phone is listed as a Verizon-specific model in their system while you're trying to use it on a cheaper MVNO (which of course they don't want you to do). Ever since Verizon launched Visible, they've been absolutely terrible with other MVNOs that use their network (for the obvious reason that they want to drive customers to their own).

I am really thinking of getting 4 of these for my parents and in-laws, but they're all on Red Pocket using Verizon and I'm afraid I'll be left with useless (to me) phones.

If you travel to certain countries blocking Google services or apps, this phone will not work as-is. Many of the built in Google apps are blocked by default (Gmail, News, Duo, etc) You are required to download certain in-country apps.

Hmm that's a fair point. The only one on my to visit list that I can think of is China. Most of my trips are Canada, Japan, India, and Western Europe all of which I think are fine for google products.

Japan may have cellular band(s) compatibility, and certain apps will be blocked/partial access only in India

The bootloader unlock would only work if the phone you receive is from the early manufactured batches .. VZW had got Google to stop allowing bootloader unlocks on pixel 3s few months after the release..

And have you really made the eSIM work? I'm asking as I know that there's only one IMEI registered for the VZW pixel 3s so how would you make the eSIM work .. with what identifier??

I am looking to buy a Pixel so that I could get the unlimited photo storage.

I use an Apple phone most of the time, and would be uploading most of my photos from my Apple phone.

If I buy this phone and put it on my account will I have unlimited photos, even those uploaded from my Apple phone?

Nope, you HAVE TO upload from a Pixel. I read people are uploading from the pixel using scrips that reads from a network shared folder to use the unlimited photo storage.

You're certainly right that people get addicted to buying phones, but buying a 3 year old model phone that will stop getting future updates in just 4 months is a security risk.

Personally I'm an Android person who gets a phone maybe every 2 years... so I wouldn't even get a Pixel 4 at this point. Pixel 4a as the oldest to guarantee all updates.

If you can hold onto to a phone 3,4,5+ years... I'd go with Apple who supports their stuff for about 7 years now.
