Wonderful 101 is made by Platinum, which should give you a general indication of their style of games. Other notable games from them include Bayonetta, Astral Chain, Vanquish, and NeiR:Automata. W101 is same type of frantic combo - but with an isometric view and interesting ideas.
The story feels very cartoon superhero based (think Incredibles), which gives it a fun and childish storyline. However their combat system is more like a fighting game. Easy modes are there and will reward button mashing with "auto-combos", but a lot of the fun of Platinum games is figuring out combos and executing them. Like you can 100->0 a boss if you know how to juggle and link attacks. To that effect, it's a very arcade type feel.
It's a fun game and I enjoy Platinum games. It's not a bad entry into this type of genre as the difficulty can scale accordingly, but it's not the easiest entry. I've read that they changed up the tutorials for the remaster (I had the WiiU), but I definitely had to watch some FAQs on youtube to reveal the playstyle I was supposed to use. Also, if you don't actually like this style of game, then there's also no replayability value once you finish the game.
For $15 I'd buy it for my kid, but then play it myself.
