Those are basically different ways to get more internet coverage in the house. Spare the technical details, unless Ethernet is available or using the electrical lines in the house with special complex signal processing for carrying communication between the wireless access points, one will need to sacrifice radio bandwidth to serve as the backbone. Newer technology can use higher frequency and will provide higher bandwidth but may also reduce the physical range. Newer technology can also use multiple frequencies to delivered higher speed to more devices. The discussion here is asking if the money spent on the extender will be worth awhile when compared to other solutions.

I have a few of these. I use them to get WiFi devices that don't have WiFi enabled. I've been using one on my PC for three years and still haven't had a problem!

Onemesh kinda sux and isn't like true mesh. It only extends one of your SSID so say guest wifi from main won't get extended. I learned it the hard way.

Ideally the range extenders almost always throttle the internet speed due to the bandwidth sharing over the wireless channels that are used to do data communication. In order to get the best experience on a range extender, get the one which is tri band. Those extenders use one band specifically for cross communication between router and Extender and use the other two bands for data transfer. This helps ensure that you get maximum speed and bandwidth for data.
