Care to elaborate? What products would be a good replacement? If I'm in an apartment, does it even matter since I don't care about maintaining the drain?

please don't use draino. better to use something that uses enzymes to breakdown clogs otherwise you'll have to pay for a plumber to snake your drain.

we just had a plumber snake our drain because past usage of draino created a soft clog that my snake could not reach. he said drain cleaners that use sulfur and lye burn up all the debris in the pipe but can leave behind a black sludge that creates soft clogs that are harder to get out. he recommended we can use baking soda and vinegar, filling the sink with water and emptying it once a month, or getting a drain cleaner that uses enzymes. he didn't name any specific products but he said there are some available now.

Looks like that user may be onto something. There's several website advising against using Drano.

Boiling water works well. Pour a pot down once every two weeks.
