Can anyone chime in on a good detergent for smelly gym towels & clothes (both cotton and synthetics). I saw some detergent advertising added enzymes for breaking down oils & killing off bacteria., The gf's Peloton-worn clothes are a bit of an issue of contention, and we use shared washers that always seem to have a funk.

For reference, we use Persil which handles food stains well, but most detergents seem to only cover up the smells--I remember Tide Sport had a good scent but didn't really clean up existing smells.
I use this as a washing machine cleaner. I put in a glug in the basin of my front loader and let it go through its self cleaning cycle. It's cheaper and smells better than some of the other cleaners I've used.

I've tried the "sport detergents" and they didn't get the funk out of the workout clothes. It was a highly rated one on Amazon (forget the name) and it's fairly expensive.

This Lysol has worked though -- you may need to do a pre-soak the first time to get rid of the initial funk. But if you add this to every wash, if it's anything like my workout clothes, they come out fine now...
Thanks! The pricey ---something--- Green one seems to have ranked top in the algorithm, and I'm always doubly wary of products that spend a ton on social media advertising. But $4 is something I can try once.

I use Pine-Sol. Works great, it's only like $10/gallon, and you can use it for all kinds of other things, too.

Not for everyone! Read the reviews! Thanks, but I will pass.

Wow you are correct. Dozens of cases of documented damage to clothing.

Definitely not for anything nice and expensive.

Destruction of clothing fibers, rust and wear and tear on zippers and buttons, unraveling thread damage, and blotchiness and color reduction.

Whoa! 😳

Just FYI: This WILL cause fading for colored uniform scrubs.

I have a hunch this is just watered down pool poly-quat. But that's just a guess.

If anyone knows a good way to disinfect fabrics (on the cheap) without fading, please do share.

For the people dealing with odor issues.

Does good ole tried and true and CHEAP baking soda not work?

Just add 1/3 to 1/2 cup a load. (For HE 1/4 to 1/3 cup)

If the funk is a rockstar, add borax too.

Natural stuff thats been used for ages.

Serious question: anyone know what ingredient exactly IS "odor eliminator" that's on products?

is it a chemical or something?

This works really well on my dog's items. I have an elderly dog that occasionally has an accident in her bed. I've tried baking soda, bleach, various detergents, vinegar, etc. to get rid of the pee smell. The Lysol laundry sanitizer is the only thing I've found that eliminates the odor completely. I use it in the wash cycle (along with detergent) as well as in place of fabric softener and then I triple rinse it. I'm using a lot of energy and water, but I'm not having to replace the dog's bed constantly.

I've tried vinegar and baking soda (separately), but both haven't worked. I have a bar of fels-naphta I guess I could try rubbing into the sweaty parts. I find the fels to be a bit hit or miss with stains--sometimes collar stains come out like magic, other times it seems to do nothing, which seems to be the story for most laundry products--eventually find myself getting something new to clean up what's left behind from other products. And it's also the reason why I always seem to be accumulating laundry products.

Doesn't the dryer get hot enough to kill all germs/viruses?

Viruses will die off between the amount of time your laundry is is sitting waiting to get washed, they will wash off during the wash cycles and dryer. This is essentially fool's gold but if people like throwing away money why stop them.

Are you talking about something like Grangers or Odor Eliminator? the odor eliminator does work for my hats which smell awful after playing tennis. I would give it a try. I just find that I have to do it after every use.

What does one do to have clothes that funky? I feel like you'd have to work in a zoo and roll around in sh*t all day.

Maybe you've tried it, but products like Nature's Miracle have enzymes. I mostly used it on carpets but I believe you can use it in laundry , or as a pretreat.
Dogs have a keen sense of smell so if the product uses fragrance (even if natural), I'd proceed with caution.
I usually do a vinegar rinse, as well.

I would be interested to know what's in this Lysol product. I got as far as seeing it was fragranced, and moved on.

Thanks! Got on the app on my phone and added it to S&S for August.

I'm just about out of the stuff I bought a year and a half ago when I believed there was a public health reason to do so. Obviously that turned out to be utterly unnecessary but this adds a great smell to clean clothes, pleasant but not overbearing, and adds an extra measure of clean to coloreds where it's not advisable to bleach.

My mother in law's clothes always smelled so nice and I found out that she uses this stuff religiously. So I bought this stuff, love it and go through a bottle very quickly. I can't say if there's any real sanitizing effect going on, but my clothes/linens smell so refreshing. I haven't had an issue with it ruining clothes like some of the Amazon reviews. Thanks OP

Correct, this is basically just a Quaternary Ammonium compound, actually a quad-QAC. Different arrangements of benzalkonium chlorides.

I assume they chose the type of QAC's to minimize quat binding and have it active enough in a laundry cycle because cotton will quickly bind up the sanitizing chemicals.

This isn't a bad thing, they work very well at disinfecting and cleaning, but it is only a very watered down QAC, some Ethoxylated Ethanol, and ph buffers probably to reduce binding.

Concentrated QAC is very inexpensive.

Could be better served by Borax and Washing soda to boost your detergent unless you have very soft water already then you are getting the best you can.
