I've been looking for a good deal on a decent mirrorless camera but missed the recent Nikon sale. Many people have recommended the Sony A7 series of cameras and this version from around 2015 seems to have just gone on sale for about $600 cheaper than usual.

https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/pr...rless.html > now $1,236.95

I have the a7r3. Don't be confused between A7 and A7R people.

One is full-frame, the other is not.
This is incorrect.

Both the A7 II and the A7RII, as well as more recent models such as the A7RIV and A7IV(not yet released) are both full frame sensors, just with differing resolutions and features. You can pick the model based on your needs and photography style.

This camera has an amazing sensor, this is a great price, but you still shouldn't buy it.

This uses the older generation of battery that was finally discontinued because of how poorly it performed in this very camera (and how much it got slammed by reviewers). Essentially battery consumption increased generation upon generation, but battery capacity stayed the same resulting in this camera where you'll want the battery grip + two batteries just for the 10% less shooting time (as opposed to 55% less with only the included battery).

Plus the older batteries counter-intuitively work out more expensive. One of the batteries this takes is $50, whereas the newer batteries are $75, but since they provide 122% more capacity (1020 mAh vs 2280mAh) you'll be paying less per shot/per mAh/etc. Also note that one newer battery takes up less space than two of the older batteries (and weigh less when including the battery grip).

this or a7iii (>$500 more)?
The a7iv is rumored to be coming out imminently. I'd wait for that, and then pick up an a7iii on sale.

Generally speaking, the a7rii is a good sensor in a bad body. It has a terrible battery, poor auto focus by modern standards, slow burst shooting, a slow processor and small cache, lower quality evf, a screen that doesn't fully articulate, poor touchscreen functionality, very limited weather sealing, poor ergonomics, and relatively poor video capabilities.

All in exchange for higher resolution that will only be realized when using a tripod with sharp and costly prime lenses. The reality is that for the vast majority of users, that's not a good trade off.

If you are new, wanted full frame and plan to do more than studio shooting then you should have bought a Nikon Z5 last week when it was $999.

Eye AF not as good as the newest Sony, but better than this.
Density of the PPI while not as good since its only a 24mb sensor is still found by many people to be superior to this one in the final image.

Regardless, the most important thing that can't be disputed is the Z5 can be used with a power bank. You don't have to worry about battery capacity or the price per mAh ever again.

If you really want a good Sony, do not buy anything that was released before a7iii
It depends what you're using it for. It's a great landscape camera because it has the same sensor as the a7R III, but it's not a great portrait/wildlife/sports camera because it doesn't have the same auto focusing capabilities as the III or the R III. It's still a decent camera for those applications, but not ideal.

There is more to a landscape camera than the sensor. Weather sealing, screen quality and adjustability, and battery life, all matter greatly. I can't tell you how frustrating the lack of a fully articulating screen is on this camera when taking landscape shots. Back / neck breaking.

Also, the lack of an automated focus stacking feature is missing versus competition, which is also super annoying.

For 1k I don't disagree its a fine deal if all you do is landscape photos on a tripod. But you'll want to spend at least another 1.5k in lenses and 300+ for a tripod, then more for filters. Why go cheap on the body? You can get the riii for like ~$700 more. Worth it if you're already spending 3k+ on the full setup imo.

I get the point about sensor but every Sony before the A7III had multiple major flaws eg. tiny battery, unreliable AF , worse weather sealing , a maze like menu system .. some of them are still unresolved
The success of A7iii and later has lifted the favourability of many older Sony cameras too but I'd say please do not apply Sony's current image to older cameras and specially when spending so much $$$ stay clear of older bodies.

Unfortunately Sony only fixed the menu system in the A7S III and said they have no intention of back porting it back. Even fairly new cameras like the a7C won't get it. I agree with above. Sony's current gen cameras are kind of casting an undeserved halo over their older ones.

The a7 IV is actually a pretty significant camera it will be the first to combine the menu system from the A7S III, the autofocus from the A7C, with an upgraded sensor and more processing power all at hopefully a sub-2K price point.

Like I said, it's still just fine for studio work and landscapes. The battery point is moot, as you can get a bunch of batteries for the $1000+ price difference between II & III for a brand new body. Also, you can charge and power it up from USB powerbanks even though it's micro USB.

Regarding the expensive lenses - if you're getting into Sony ecosystem, you're going to use those lenses for a long time anyway, well beyond the life of this particular camera body. When you're tired of it, you will sell it for the price close to what you paid for it. Try it with III or IV...

And no, D750 and z50 are still no match for this one on IQ, in fact, like I said, this is simply the best IQ you can buy for this price, brand new.

Its "fine." Sure. I agree. But pretending things like the screen, weather sealing, and battery, are just nothing-burgers is naïve. How many times have you been out in the field changing batteries? I'm guessing not that much. Sure let me just take it off the tripod, take off my grip with a hex wrench, take out my camera bag (hope its not sandy or muddy or wet with salt spray...), get a new battery and put it in, put everything away, put the grip back on, put it back on the tripod. Oh the joy.

Regarding IQ, its easier to make up for that than it is things like the battery or screen. First off, the z5 and D750 have MORE dynamic range than the a7rii. If you need more resolution, you can merge multiple shots and get far more than 42 mp. Granted, that adds complexity and difficulty. But so does swapping batteries and avoiding moisture and craning your neck to see the screen.

For those who want to know the difference between A7r3 and 2. Its simply that Sony has made quailty of life improvements. They shoot the same 40mp image, but the 2 overheats and haves noise issues at higher ISO.

I can shoot at 1600 with no noise on the A7r3. Its insane!

I have an A7R2. Focus is fast enough to keep up with my small kids, but could definitely be faster. All depends on what you shoot if it would work well for you or not. Battery life isn't great, but it's not a complete detriment either. Granted I'm just an amateur lifestyle/cars/portrait/whatever photographer. A lot of the time I'm shooting through some older adapted L series Canon lenses, so focus isn't great one way or the other.

I'll happily switch to an R4 once prices come down on them more. I paid $1100 for my R2 on the used market about a year and a half ago.
