I've been looking for a good deal on a decent mirrorless camera but missed the recent Nikon sale. Many people have recommended the Sony A7 series of cameras and this version from around 2015 seems to have just gone on sale for about $600 cheaper than usual.
Thanks for the advice. I am still learning my options. Trying to get a good travel camera for under $1500.
A7iii with edu discounts has sold for $1400 multiple times now.. Sony should have reduced it to less than 1.5k
But Sony has been wierd .. when it was launched it was way underpriced at 2k and now it's a little overpriced at 1.9k,. Hope they fix it soon and release a successor
A7R II is a great camera. A lot better than most mid-rangers today.
Agreed, though it is getting a bit long in the tooth (AF is slower than modern competition and battery life is dismal) it still punches above its price bracket.
Im an RP user myself but I recommended my friend get the A7Rii for their upgrade. If you know what to expect out of it then it still holds up great because the sensor tech was and is solid.
This is a solid buy for Photography, but long in the tooth for run and gun video. 42MP at this price is just bonkers and the lens ecosystem just makes this a solid buy for anyone looking for a full frame camera with insane resolution.
If you really want a good Sony, do not buy anything that was released before a7iii
This is horrible advice. First off, not everyone wants a $2000 + camera. Second, Sony cameras are extremely good cameras and, dating back to the 6000 series, have some of the best sensors in the business. If you want to learn photography on a great mirrorless camera and do it for a great price, feel safe in investing in something released before the a7iii.

for me if I was basing an advice on $1100, I'll pickup a D750 used with few primes and that'd get me better photos than this any day .. Sony got the AF right with A7iii and anything after that has that special AF magic that makes it worth it
And I totally forgot about the battery that this one uses.. if you really want to use it while travelling , be prepared to carry a dozen of them at least ..
I was at a7iii based on reviews and prices. Then I started looking at sample images. Then I went to Canon R. Now I'm holding out for sale at R6. BTW, I am biased towards Canon. Couldn't make the switch.
