To state the obvious. This will get you a ticket if you block your plate.

Not likely. And then, so what if you are pulled over and they run your plate to find out you're legal. Nothing burger.

some states have laws that obscuring any portion of your plate is a ticketable offense. usually enforced by douches, but still could be a hassle.

I see people with blocked plates all the time carrying bikes as a hitch in California. It's a reason to get pulled over but the police are too busy chasing after lower hanging fruit.

except for the guaranteed time that you've wasted and the potential ticket for concealed license plate.

Some places allow you to temporarily relocate your license plate when using something like this.

I got curious after this and looked it up. This is a pretty good catch all even though each state has different requirements.

--------From etrailer dot com-------------

Question:
What is typically done when a load blocks the license plate from view? Is this illegal? Does the license plate need to be moved to the back of the carrier?

The legality of an obscured rear license plate varies from state to state. If you want to heed the letter of the law, the plate can be relocated to the rear of the cargo carrier.

We sell quite a few cargo carriers, and to be honest, it is really not that much of an issue. You could zip tie the plate to your carrier, or use a bracket with a light like part # LPL55CB (In most states, the rear license plate is required to be lit after dark).

If your vehicle has a trailer connector, you can splice into the running light circuit and ground wire from the connector with a 2 Wire Loop, # 9651P, to make a quick easy disconnect for the license plate light on the carrier.
