Do you need a heat gun or would a blow torch or lighter work?

You can use torch/lighter but you run the risk of burning them. Much easier to use heat gun. To melt the solder ring inside, you need to keep a steady temperature on it which can be very difficult with a flame

Anyone thinking about getting this, don't. I have this exact item and I hate it. A hair dryer is too weak to work and a heat gun is too strong. The plastic melts and creates holes way before the solder has a chance to melt.

Does changing the heat gun setting (low/high) make a difference?

I have a heat gun from harbor freight which has low and high. The low setting was too weak to melt the solder. The high setting melted the solder, but the plastic develops holes very early. The plastic is way too thin and fragile.

Bought this same item on the listing, had the exact same experience. I can't recommend these to anyone, horrible material.

This deal came up right after I ordered a heat gun and shrink tubing, for $6, I'll give it a try. Saves me a trip to my office to pick up my solder

It's not as easy as the advertisement shows. To melt the solder, you need to put heat gun on high and keep moving the heat gun around. The higher the gauge the harder it is to melt the solder. Remember, to properly tin/solder, you MUST get the copper underneath the ring to the same temp (tricky to do underneath an insulating tube). It takes patience. These connectors are the best when you want to keep the final diameter of the wire small as possible and don't want a huge fat bump on a cable.

I have the exact same heat gun and have had absolutely no issues with these.

Put the heat gun on your work surface facing up (the flat back allows it to be used hands-free), and keep the wire moving / rolling to avoid burning and bubbling - works like a charm. YMMV.

I don't do a ton of soldering, but these things are a lifesaver when I do!

If you want a really good soldering connection, you need use a solder and shrink tubing and don't use this kind of things.

I have a pack of this brand. I have to keep the heat gun concentrated on the solder ring for about 20 secs to get it to finally melt and disperse. I always worry about burning the shrink tubing or even the wire insulation.

Coming to say the same thing but I would still have these as an option. They have their place but the consistency and repeatability is questionable. I use them occasionally but not my primary method. I've used a heat gun, bic lighter, and my Dremel solder/torch and honestly no one is better than the other. Maybe there is a skillset or art to using them to get consistent results that is a lot different than regular solder and heatshink but I can use just about any other method with better longer lasting results.

Gone 50 years with any number of projects and fixes. Never once used 10-12awg outside of some heavy speaker wire that didn't need splicing anyway. So I'd say 10 is more than enough for most people. Not sure I'd really trust these cheap connectors with wire that heavy anyway.

I also have a craplousy $10 heat gun from HF (DRILL MASTER!!!!!), have had no problem making these connectors work, even when working in an awkward position or tight confines.
