Various Retailers have A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: A Song of Ice and Fire by George R. R. Martin (eBook) on sale for $2.99.

Thanks to Deal Editor Discombobulated for finding this deal.

Available:About this book:
  • A young, naïve but courageous hedge knight, Ser Duncan the Tall towers above his rivals – in stature if not experience. Tagging along with him is his diminutive squire, a boy called Egg – whose true identity must be hidden from all he and Dunk encounter: for in reality he is Aegon Targaryen, and one day he will be king. Improbable heroes though they be, great destinies lie ahead for Dunk and Egg; as do powerful foes, royal intrigue, and outrageous exploits.
  • A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms brings together for the first time the first three official prequel novellas to George R.R. Martin's ongoing masterwork, A Song of Ice and Fire, set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne, and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory.

I imagine you'll find it pretty boring unless you're already sucked into the GoT world. These were originally written as side novellas, taking place long before the main storyline. So they're meant to satiate the appetite of fans, not newcomers.

Also, the main storyline will never be finished in print. Martin will never do it and he will not allow posthumous co-authoring. So while books 1 and 2 are awesome and Westeros is one of my favorite fantasy worlds ever made, I could never in good conscience recommend them to another reader. Because what permitted the excitement of those early books was the expectation that the story would be finished one day (silly I know).

I'd put money on Robert Jordan finishing another book before GRRM.

Sanderson will literally finish 2-3 series by the time Martin finishes GOT. This is not hyperbole - it's just a fact.

If you bet on which author will finish the series you could apply those winnings to the purchase price in 2030. 5:2 on Sanderson.

Any prerequisites that is needed prior to starting this. Some of these authors have so many signoffs of characters it hard to just pickup a book without having some historical context of the character.

I bought this when it was on sale for $3.99 so this is a better price. Alas, I have not read it yet.

Wheel of time is no GoT but both earned a place on our bookshelves.

Prerequisite? An understanding that this series will never end.

You are right. WoT actually got finished. While Robert Jordan got very repetitive with his female characters he did have a plan. GRRM was just winging it and after the TV show debacle will most likely never finish.

Books 1-3 were awesome, but 4-5 were a chore. They had payoff, but only after about 1000 pages of useless new characters, locations and filler about freaky people doing freaky things.

This thread is awesome! I knew it would devolve into Winds of Winter bashing. Smilie

Let's wager...

Who's most likely to finish: Martin or Rothfuss?

They may own a double crypt together, but I'm not holding my breath.

its pretty unrelated to the GoT series, they build alot of characters in the story, it takes place in the world and you maybe wont get some of the name references, but its a great read, don quixote style without all the silliness.
