Bought last time it was this price for AA size (month or so ago) & mine wouldn't hold charge, not sure what was defective. Customer service was great - replaced both charger & batteries.

Did they replace with the same item and were those any better?

Same items, so far they're working better. Think the charger was defective.

Bad deal for many reasons.
  • EBL batteries usually are about 70% of their advertised capacity. Expect 700-800 not 1100. Search reviews for test results.
  • You can't have it both ways: 800-900 is the top for *real* LSD batteries. Any AAA's of 1100 mAh are not going to be low self discharge batteries regardless of claims. Again search reviews for 50% loss in just months not a tiny 15% after a year claimed.
  • The charger is set up to fry your AAA batteries (when placed every other slot). Pumping up to 1 amp per hour into each battery. Charging should typically be done with at most 1/2 "C"apacity. e.g. 400 mA for a 800mAh real capacity battery. 1 amp for a AA (> 2000 capacity) is doable but still can build up heat and reduce lifetime.
  • There is no fan and the slots are close, at that amount of current there is going to be a lot of heat which also kills batteries.
  • Using anything other than every other slot of 4; it will reduce your current to 500 mA which would be in the safer zone for AAA, but then be slower than expected for AA, but safer.
  • Unknown trickle charge amount. If you have true LSD batteries they should be barely trickle charged (< 10mA). Many of these keep a 50, 100mA charge running as long as they're left in the charger.

Do yourself a favor: Buy decent batteries without fake capacity ratings, fake "low discharge" claims, and buy decent chargers that let you set each slot to a safe level of current; and also perform refresh "burn in tests" to get the most out of your batteries.

Many of those are between $25 and $35 on Amazon for a 4 slot unit with way more capabilities. And many of those offer LiIon cell charging capabilities as well.

Read the reviews on the DK site. But in general if there are buttons to control mode, current and display and each charging chamber, it's more than likely (though not guaranteed) to be a better one. Doublecheck that site above to be sure they have good charge curves and low trickle current (or be aware at least you should pull them out once they're charged to avoid problems if you've paid good money for better real LSDs like Eneloop's and others.

As to which charger, here's just a handful of interesting ones rated actually pretty well from that site:
