Thanks! I just had a 5TB Western Digital drive die in my Drobo. Crazy how two years ago I bought two 8TB white label (Reds) for $232.89 as a 2-pack. This 6TB Black Drive should last (I hope).

You're basically paying a premium for the 5 year warranty. Warranty replacement turnarounds tend to be faster than regular drives too.

Ya no thanks. Terrible price and you shouldn't be keeping drives around for 5 years so a longer warranty isn't necessary. Once you start needing drives with space like this, it's most likely for things such as media storage. Any speed benefits are nearly pointless after initial loading of the files so there's no reason to pay a premium for that either. Finally if you try to say "well reliability..." well if you're dealing with this much storage you best not be using outside of a redundant solution.
I would disagree. The price isn't terrible and I've had drives longer than 5yo. I have a 7yo WD and 10yo seagate still kicking. 6TB is not alot of space either, even excluding media files, though media is a large reason to upgrade your drives. And backups! Don't forget to backup!

Isn't the 8TB Seagate iron wolf a better deal at $204.99 from B&H?

FYI these make a clicky noise every 10 15 seconds. I thought it was a faulty drive at first so I exchanged for another one and it still does the same thing. Apparently on these 6tb drives the clicky noise comes from a mechanism that keeps the drive healthy or something.

$28/TB is absolutely a terrible price even with the Chia surge. Finding deals (we're on slickdeals remember) at $20/TB> should still be the goal. Ideally $15/TB but those deals have been few and far between since Thanksgiving.

Also, yes a drive "can" last for 10 years but the longer you leave it in production, the higher chance of a failure. Rotating drives out every 3 years or so is good practice. I recently sold a 3TB that I had in production for 10 years but I did not feel safe with data on that drive and this was within a dual parity Unraid array (92TB total). Also, it is an excellent time to sell your old drives if you want to get rid of them. I recently condensed my entire server down to 5x16TB drives and 2x 14TB drives and made more on the resale prices than the new purchases. All large format drives were purchased from Best Buy and a enterprise equipment refurbisher for $15-18/TB.

If you absolutely need this drive right now for whatever reason, then yes this is your best deal for this drive. However, that does not mean it's a good deal (which it isn't) and also, as I said before, I see no reason why you need a high performance drive like this for basic data storage. You're paying a premium for little to no good reason. If your sole purpose is streaming videos over your home network, their bitrates can easily be handled by much slower but far cheaper drives. If you're transferring other large amounts of data that require fast performance, you probably should be looking towards solid state based arrays anyway.

To the OP. This drive isn't compatible with Synology DS920+, no WD Black is compatible. For a few bucks more just get the Red Pro, or Ironwolf.

If you can wait till Black Friday to get this I would. I got this drive last year for around $130.

Just because you typed a novel as a reply doesn't make you right. The needs of end users are subjective. The drive has a 5 year warranty. Who the hell switches their drives every three years? Especially HDDs?

You're entitled to your opinion, but your opinion is not fact.
