The difference is that the new one has a new DAC. The place that made the old DACs was destroyed in a fire.

So there should not be a performance difference between the old and new model

This is one of those things I do not want to know about…because if I research it I will learn that it's probably something really cool and then I will think it's really important and then I will try to justify spending $850 on some thing I didn't really know existed, above and beyond my $50 Blu-ray player
