This is a office pc. Not a workstation
This is a workstation computer definitely not a gaming one.

Mine was shipped same day. Maybe they only had so many and oversold.

Any pointers on the setup? Just plug and play? And driver updates needed? (external) packaging condition when delivered?

Setup is easy. I bought 8 gb of extra ram and installed. It's a great little machine if you are just using it for easy tasks, email, lite gaming. The SSD isnt the greatest(SK Hynix) but its more than enough for everyday use.

  • Been using it as a dedicated Plex server....uninstalled bloatware (AV, Office etc.)...added Team Viewer & idrive (for daily backup)
  • The system runs at 60% RAM & 40% Processor utilization when not playing any media. Handles upto 2160p flawlessly.
  • 4K file transcodes (10GB+) are a different matter all together.....The system runs at 80% RAM & 100% Processor utilization....rather the system does play the media...keeps on stuttering making the whole experience uggh!
Any suggestions on how to run transcoded 4K files?

Sure - buy Plexpass and take advantage of hardware transcoding; it will fix all your CPU issues. Try it for a month to confirm it does what I say, and then buy it - best deal ever. I've had it for years; with an Intel iGPU it's the bomb.

Why in the world does it use 40% processor when not doing anything?

I have Plex Pass......Didn't have hardware transcoding enabled (presuming it needed graphics card)...enabled 'Use hardware acceleration when available'....now media server utilization is down to 60% for the 4K file....still buffering intermittently....same file plays flawlessly using Kodi (on same device & network)....stumped!

Update your intel graphics drivers to the latest version via Intel.com.

And again, what's it doing at idle that it's using 40% CPU?

Will do, thanks! The 40% idle usage is by system, not the Plex server. Sorry for the confusion.

Yes, I know. I am asking what the system is doing when you're at idle that swallows 40% of your CPU. What's happening? That is far from typical. Do you have some massive tasks in the background going on?

That's gone down to near zero after implementing the changes you recommended, thanks! The RAM usage is still high (60% system, 10% Plex server). Will upgrading the RAM help with transcodes?

Not at all. I'm sure your RAM is fine.

So when you're transcoding, what's stressed? Look in Task Manager or Resource Manager, and see what's happening. Dig into the details and you can see exactly what's happening.

The Intel iGPU should be able to handle 15 or 20 normal transcodes, and 1-3 HDR transcodes at 4k. The issue with 4K is the tone mapping work; that takes massive CPU time even with HW transcoding since the GPU can't do all the required work.

Did upgrading the Intel drivers help with transcoding? What's the latest status?

The Intel drivers are up to date. Running 1 transcode (4K, 15.4Mbps -> 2160p, 15.4Mbps) bumps the CPU utilization from <5% to 50/60%. Memory/RAM usage jumps from 50%/60% ->75%. Plus buffering every 2 min.
Plex Transcode (32bit) -> 55% CPU, 32% GPU, 948MB RAM
PMS -> 0.6% CPU, 200MB
Everything else is less than 0.5% CPU

The same file on Kodi ran like a dream. Plex has become a running joke in my home now ("So now we are back to Kodi")
