I lit a controlled fire in my backyard and let my kids practice putting it out with an expired fire extinguisher. I don't want them figuring out how to do it during a real emergency.

These BC (flammable liquid and electrical fires) extinguishers are charged with baking soda and more for auto and boats that would have a fuel or electrical fire.

The 'A' in the so called house ABC extinguisher is for wood and wood products, like paper..... and most certainly for a residential garage. The reason the 'BC' is better for auto and boats is the chemical used for the 'A' is caustic and makes a mess of electrical components.

I can see no valid reason for the homeowner to limit their protection with this BC extinguisher when they will most certainly need the ABC capability. You could keep this BC close to a stove for a grease fire, but a box of baking soda is the same thing.

What is the shelf life of this? What do you with the old one that was never used ?. I bought one about 5 years ago, still in my garage, not sure if I need to replace it and what to do with existing one

Looks like this one has 10 years of life

I'm wondering: what distinguishes a fire extinguisher for a garage/shop vs. one for the house?

Also, Amazon's [amazon.com] price is $21.99 (same w/ Target and Lowe's). -> now $27.36.

I think both the size and the rating 10-B:C (ie which types of fires it is more effective on)
can make an extinguisher better suited from some places than others. also marketing Smilie

Usually you can drop it off for free at your local fire department/house or local landfill where they can safely dispose it. Call to confirm they take them for free. Please don't just throw it in the trash.
