It's not whether the furnace can handle it, it comes down to what the original Installer determined for the Airflow requirement.

If you go high on merv, you're just wasting money, because typical homes are not airtight enough for the furnace filter to be an effective filter. Outside air is getting in from everywhere.

Higher filtration at the furnace level is just a waste of money. If you want to filter, get a room filter, way cheaper electric bill, way more efficient furnace performance, and way better air quality where you sit.
I usually just get these and spray pledge on it before installing. Works great!

Maybe it's snakeoil but I'd rather pay a bit more for a higher MERV/MPR rating. MERV 8 / 600 is bottom of the barrel. Hospitals use 13-16. Still, this is a decent price for this rating.

Filters have really gotten expensive. I remember when I could get a dozen Merv 8 filters for 40 bucks on discountfilters.com

I've heard similar from hairspray. Contractors said use cheap filters, spray it on let it sit a bit and then install them. Supposedly grabs more particles for the cheapest filters but I never noticed a real difference

This is incorrect. Even the worst homes are air tight enough to substantially improve air quality (35% reductions). And newer homes can vastly improve it (95% reductions):

As to whether a portable filter or whole home makes sense, it depends on your use case, home, conditions, and budget. Both will substantially improve air quality.
