Overall impression is very solid for the money. Surprised that the build quality is reasonably good, although it isn't winning any beauty pageants soon. The plastic has this interesting "stone" gray fleck pattern. Maybe not your cup of tea but I don't plan on trying to pick up girls with it at Starbucks.
I haven't taxed the system all that much. Runs overwatch at 1080p on all ultra averaging 170fps. Dota 2 in highest settings runs similar.
Fans are loud, loud as my msi stealth gs65, loud as the gigabyte aero I had, and loud as the razer blade 15 I had. It's a gaming laptop...they're all loud under load.
Display is great. Keyboard is cramped ( I hate all num pads on laptops) . Last time I checked vast majority of gaming laptop owners are not data entry or cpa's.
Lb for lb it's the most CPU and GPU u will get for the money in today's market in a laptop. The legion 5 has the same exact specs for 400 more. Can argue aesthetics, but all gaming laptops are ugly to me save the razer blade.

They seem damn near similar spec but saving $150 ish with the dell, is the Alienware r5 that much better build quality?

Seems like they are a running a deal on the dell and Alienware every few days.
Coupled with the current 10% back on some cash back sites, either or seems like a solid deal
