Great price - too bad id.me won't verify me as a student even though I'm in three classes - doesn't count as getting a degree (which I already have) and their promo I guess. Bought from B&H for higher with edu discount instead.

People, please don't feed the troll. Not worth it.

I think this is the lowest I have seen this besides the Amazon pr*ce mistake. The a7 iv must truly be near.

The funniest thing is how there's literally nothing special about cell phone camera hardware. All they have to do is implement the same computational photography tricks into standalone camera bodies. Already have focus stacking, panorama stitching, hdr, pixel shift, etc. The image sensor and color filter array technology are identical, but cameras can and do have much larger sensors to capture more light and give better image quality, lower noise, and greater contrast for the same settings in the same scene.

Considering this is a 3 year old model, thinking about whether to get this or Nikon Z5. Any suggestions are appreciated.

I was facing the same exact decision. I missed the Nikon sale a few weeks ago and probably would have bought the Z5 if it had been $999. Many people who know more than me about photography were endorsing the Sony camera, so when it went on sale I grabbed it.

One note about Nikon Z; the "budget/consumer" lenses can be more expensive. The build is also plastic.

At similar prices, the only place where the Z5 beats the A73 is viewfinder resolution. A73 is more comparable to Z6.

Agreed for the most part. Unless you are fine with using an ftz adapter which is always an additional investment but let's you use old still great Nikon lenses. Sony has much more variety in mirror less glass to choose from. It is worth noting that Nikon is actively working on that though. The 28mm $300 lens for example.

If you were looking into just photography. I think the Nikon Z5 with the z series 50mm or the normal 50 and the ftz adapter is a better deal than this 4 year old Sony which costs that much with just the body. Video however, no competition. Sony A7III all the way. Video ain't bad on the z5, but just doesn't compare to this.

The autofocus system on this will run circles around either the Nikon Z5 or Z6. Unless you've got a ton of Nikon glass you'd be adapting via the FTZ adapter the Sony is the way to go as they all have essentially the same sensor.

Not really accurate anymore. Nikon has vastly improved the autofocus on the latest few firmware updates.

IMO this is a little too pricey still. Wait for A7iv which is coming very soon, then get this (for less) or the a7iv.

You may want to check some of the reviews (Jared Polin comes to mind) and Nikon still lagging. Either way both the Sony and the Nikon will have similar image performance as they basically have the same sensor.

Jared isn't the best but whatever, the point is that the difference in autofocus between the a7iii and Nikon z5/6 is minimal. The difference in af between the a7iii and a7c/a9/a7rIv is bigger than between a7iii and Nikon. So if af is big to you, you're better off with those options (or Canon).

Image quality from the sensor between any of these options shouldn't be a deciding factor.

Fair enough. I do like that the Sony version uses cheaper, more readily available SDXC cards vs CF Express on the Z6. That said, I'm curious about how the Z6 handles as used ones seem to be going for less than $1,000 these days.
