It's a decent albeit mostly normal price for the Safari.
A lot of people recommend starting out wit either a Pilot Metropolitan or a Lamy Safari as their first fountain pen, and I've liked the Safari much, much better because it's easier to refill the ink using the converter (although both have ink cartridges available that make it easier and less messy) and the writing is smoother.
They used to cost 50 Deutsch Marks back then.

Internet stranger. Thank you for this story, not being flippant. A little history on something I looked at due to cool factor but now I know this pen maker has a history.
