their previous scale/app used to request permission for all data. Is this fixed?

Only permissions the app requests (on Android) is location and phone. I have both of those denied and app works fine like that.

It's impossible to calculate body fat without taking volume. You need to be submerged in a tank of water to measure displacement.

Zeroing it may help, wonder if there is a way with this particularly one. Most similar scales can be zeroed by putting them on a hard floor, briefly steping on them until they turn on then stepping off, wait until the reading is zero.
Supposedly it says to step on the middle and off but never zeros. I requested a replacement hoping its just defective

I mean that's not completely true. There are numerous ways to calculate body fat to a relatively accurate degree. For consumers, the best method right now to get the most accurate BFP (body fat percentage) for an affordable price seems to be Amazon's Halo fitness band (requires a subscription.)

From what I've read, the scales seem to be off by 20-30% in their calculations and the difference seems attributable not to the inaccuracy of their measurements but that they are based on generic formulas that don't work for everyone.

For what it's worth, I've had this scale for 8 months or so and I've had zero problems with it. Two people in my household use it with the app and I have no complaints. You just load up the app, stand on the scale, wait a few seconds for it to calculate weight, then wait a few more seconds for it to calculate the rest of your stats. That's it. If the other person is using it, they just load up their app and do the same thing. It automatically connects to Bluetooth seamlessly for both of us. The caveat is to not take the statistics as gospel and to track your number progress over time. Weight will be your most accurate metric to rely on.

Cannot be returned unless defective. I got the other one without looking at "Don't use if pregnant" note. Now, I can't return (even direct to Eufy) without paying shipping.

how accurate is the body fat data?

It's a gimmick and won't work
Yep, it's a bunch of nonsense on all of these scales. The people who say 'the number might be off but it can be a helpful tool to track trends' are wrong too. Grab a weight and step back onto the scale. Just like that, your body fat percentage jumps up along with your now heavier weight. These scales are nice for auto tracking weight trends over time but there is no need to complicate things by attempting to track your other metrics too.

For those who work out, then this is not a great option. Other scales have ability to turn on athlete mode that adjusts how the metrics are calculated. The other scales recommend to turn it on if you exercise more than 3x per week.

One consideration to add to others, from an owner of this particular scale, and may save another person a headache: I have slate tile in my master bath. Dependent upon what 2 year old (I won't name any names Eritrea) has been in there rearranging, the scale may find itself a bit cockeyed on the surface of tiles. I have found this will make a weight taken fluctuate by as much as 10lbs—I would imagine the other metrics it takes would be equally skewed. Keep that in mind—a flat, even surface will make for the "best" metrics results.
Enjoy, as an average non-working out user, and getting up there in age where i care a little more about my health (37) I've enjoyed seeing where I'm at.
Cheers.

The body fat measurements probably work by reading resistance etc
