I haven't been since 2011, but at that time I could get a resort room for about $50. Guest house room with AC was about $15-20, and a fan room was under $10.

Chiang Mai perhaps more than any area in Thailand is an area to explore and not hole up in a resort. If your adventuresome at all and going in low season, then you just show up and don't book anything. When you feel like changing accommodations, you just go. End up tired or drunk in Laos and need to stay the night? Just pay for your room in Thailand and in Laos and you still are out cheaper than a single night at a motel back home.

A sleeper train from Bangkok to Chiang Mai was about $20. You can grab a bottle of SangSom rum at the railway station for a few dollars, jump on the train in the afternoon, drink some with tourists from all over the world, fall asleep in your bed, and wake up Chiang Mai in the morning. It cost you nothing for accommodation for the night, and you got half way across the country to the jungle for $20.

Travel restrictions, worse now since daily cases are averaging 9000. Rice season now always cause EXTREMELY toxic air quality til after Oct.

Don't forget you have to quarantine in a Bangkok hotel for two weeks before you can go to Chiang Mai

Basically $80 a night when including the resort fee.

Don't forget thailand cost of living is dirt cheap so $80 usually goes a long way. Pretty common to find 4-5 star accommodations at that price.

Seems high for the area. Especially, since the Thailand economy is tourist driven. And there is not much tourism right now. Due to Covid.

When we went for a month we did the former - 2008 we averaged 20 bucks a day for food lodging beer travel and fun. But we did fairly on the cheap. Slept in some trains and transfer station floors. Had a blast. However now my body wouldn't tolerate what I did them and always thought if I came back I'd just pay triple and live it up. And that's still cheaper than traveling anywhere in the states. Thailand is a great place to visit

Chiangmai is overall a very safe place to travel. You will be ok even if you stay in a hotel for $30 per night. But if you need room service, gym and swimming pool, then you will only get them in luxury hotel. Fun note, Chiangmai is known by Thai as the northern place light skin pretty girls. I was told this by a doctor in Bangkok when he was treating me for a knee injury. He said with a huge smile on his face and my wife was right next to me. It was really strange.

If you aren't going out to trek, visit temples, and see the golden triangle then that defeats a lot of the purpose of visiting Chiang Mai in the first place. If you are going to hole up in a resort, you might as well do that down on the beaches around Krabi. You still get the karst rock mountains, and you get tropical beaches. You don't have to be a bachelor to do anything I mentioned. It's a lot more fun with a loved one.

May - October is Monsoon season. The water floods the whole country from the Northern Mountains (Chiang Mai) and flushes out through Bangkok into the Gulf.

In 2013 I had to bail out of Bangkok and went down to Phuket for a few weeks until the water cleared.

Best time to travel is November - April.

Golden triangle is in Chiangrai not Chiangmai.
