Another option is to run it all over with the lawnmower and use the bag for the lawnmower to collect it. Set the mower to the highest setting to help run over and collect

I have this one and it is great. The collection bag is useless as it fills up to quickly. Best to just not use it and rake the dead grass. There are plenty of youtube views on its use...

You'd have to have a power source close by no? How far has someone gone from your power source? I only have one ace to do and it seems as though this would be to difficult to deal with. Are you all doing small yards?

I've been researching this. Best bet is to rent at Home Depot for like $60 something an hour. You'll want a commercial one to get the consistency & efficiency versus something cheaper. The "red" one HD has us commercial grade and has great reviews. It'll plug 2-3" I believe. I plan on renting and using one this Fall. Probably will need a couple folks to load / unload the beast.
Renting from local equipment rental companies if you have ones is better than the big box stores based on my experience. They are much cheaper and their people have more experience.

So with this, Do you still have to rake up the thatch?
As a previous poster mentioned, the provided rear bag is just fo-sho - is only good enough if your lawn is 3' x 3'. So, best if you just ditch the bag and let the thatch drop.

Then, use your own muscle to rake up the thatch (PITA). Or, if you have your own indentured servant (baller)....

Does this work on St Augustine or Bermuda grass? Feels like the shoots and structure of the grass would just get pulled up

I have one of these and use it twice a year spring and fall. It works well for it's price but it's small and takes a while to cover your entire lawn. As mentioned don't use the included bag, best way is to pick up the thatch is with your mower.

SunJoe just came out with a 15" model which if I had to buy a new one I would choose over this if the prices were similar.

Yeah. Otherwise, you need to futz with the mower's blade. There will always be a little friendly-fire. Just clear the area, re-seed, and water.

Only PITA is to rake the thatch. But now that I have my indentured servant son, I don't rake anymore. Big Grin

I have this and never looked back.
Thanks. I have a bagging mower to pick up the dead grass.

Ya, just keep in mind that sucker is HEAVY. I did my lawn and was so exhausted at the end. And it had some inconsistent pick up and go, so I almost plowed through a fence. But after I got the hang of it, it did a good job.

Also, make sure to have something good to transprot it and know what to do. I put it in my SUV and the home depot people were not very helpful other than lifting it in. They didnt' have string to tie down and I was about to drive off when I realized if I had to stop realtively quickly the thing woudl either plow into me or through my back window. Went to the main store to get some string to tie it down.

Overall it was a PITA but definitely worth it. It is heavy but my wife and I were able to lift it back into the car after I was done. It has some weights that you can remove to lower the overall weight.

I think all the electric ones are scarifiers.. the core aerator would require much more power.. do to the depth of the cores pulled out 2 to 3 inches..
An aerator needs a lot of weight to push down and create the plugs. Even the tow-behind ones are designed for you to stack cinderblocks on top to get leverage. Any machine like that is going to need to be heavy and not the kind of plastic machine you can get away with on a dethatcher.
