Use managed only when you want to isolate traffic and use VLANs which 99% of people do not use on their home network. I do not either but I grabbed it for a temple where I have a network deployed.

According to the Netgear support chat site it does not support LAG even though the product description does indicate it supports LAG.

Its fanless and the upper operating temp is only 104° f (40° c). Better plan on having this in a well ventilated space and away from other equipment to not hit that temp.

Interestingly, the 4 port model of this can run up to 122°f (50°c).

How are you intending to use the smart switch and or VLAN features of the switch you purchased? Like the other poster, I'm good with computers but relatively inexperienced with networking. I'd like to upgrade my hardware to be able to handle POE cameras that I intend to buy and also to split off smart home products from my main network (is that what VLANS are for?) Any suggestions?

In essence yes that use case is correct here. I have a guest wifi on the temple which sits on vlan1 and my internal computers on vlan2 and security cameras on vlan3. So with managed switch I can assigned each of the ports on the switch to appropriate vlans and isolate the traffic from each others. For unmanaged switch, all the traffic sits on same vlan

A vlan would be useful in that instance in two ways. The first is isolation so that, for example, that TCL TV and the amazon echo devices have no way of accessing your cameras. Who knows how secure TCL makes their TV firmware. The TV could become an entry point into your network. And camera security is pretty rudimentary, so once the TV is compromised (because it has internet access), your pure lan devices become vulnerable. Vlans provide isolation so the TV can't access the cameras.

Vlans also make access control abit cleaner. Even with non-managed switches, you can block the camera from the internet. But vlans help make cleaner network segregation so the entire VLAN is blocked from internet.

I hope you're planning to block the cameras from direct internet access. Use a NVR software to access the video stream.

Thank you for taking the time to provide a detailed answer. Would you happen to have links to any high quality tutorials/walk throughs on setting up a system like you described? I'm not sure if my current hardware supports features like that (probably not I have an Eero Pro 6 mesh network going to a unmanaged 16 port netgear switch) but if not, would adding the tp link switch you went with allow that type of functionality? Also any suggestions for adding/integrating POE for the cameras?

Sorry for the million questions. Between trying to get educated on networking and security cameras, I feel like I'm learning a new language. I get tempted to go the ubiquiti route like all the tech youtubers but it would be great to find a more value minded solution.
