Every person is different. Some it may take 1mg while others 5mg to fall asleep. As for me, I take 3mg it I am already somewhat sleepy, but can't sleep. And 5mg if I am not sleepy at all but need to wake up refresh and well rested. And brands do matter. The Costco 5mg are knockouts for me while the Walmart brand are lightweights.
sure, if this was a weight based medicine like antibiotics or such, but it is a hormone and thus that doesn't play a role in it.

I need 10 mg melatonin for it to work. Been using it for years pretty regularly. If I only took 3 mg, I'd be able to run a marathon without it affecting me in the slightest.

I went to a [well known chain] drug store recently to restock and most of what they had on the shelf was 10mg. A few 5mg. I left empty handed.
yes, most of these places try to sell on the "we have more in ours" mentality and ignorant fools who don't know any better will buy the biggest dose because they think "more is better"

and with melatonin, it's one of the cases where MORE IS NOT BETTER
and actually LESS IS BETTER and MORE EFFECTIVE

you're probably expecting the wrong thing
melatonin isnt meant to "knock you out"
it's meant to allow you to fall asleep when lying down

if your expecting it to "make you tired" while your up and about, well you've chosen the wrong drug for that

i've been using 300mcg for at least 4-5 years, consistently EVERY NIGHT.

I Am up at 12:26am right now because i haven't taken it yet. if i had taken it at 11pm like usual, I'd be able to lie down by 11:30pm and sleep by 11:45pm

Nature Made SAM-e is on sale at Costco.
https://www.costco.com/nature-mad...72434.html

To be clear, Vascepa and Lovaza are prescription drugs.

EDIT: I forgot to ask. What brand of tart cherry concentrate do you recommend? Some aren't that concentrated.
Lakewood Organic Tart Cherry concentrate about $6 per 370 ml glass pack bottle on sale at Vitacost with 25% off coupon a few times a year. Nothing else works for me for sleep. Added surprise benefit for me was a reduction in chronic back pain which wasn't treatable and must have been due to inflammation. Excellent for salad dressings and plain yogurt. Add magnesium threonate an hour before bed for intense dreams.

Yes. Yes. Sam-e complete 400 x 60 at Costco on sale is the best deal. I always sock up. Rx indication on Vascepa and Lovaza is usually high triglycerides. Insurance may cover it for certain diagnosis especially if being treated with a medicine which causes high Trigs. Otherwise, without a discount coupon it is $$$. You get what you pay for with one capsule having more EPA DHA than an entire bottle of crap fish oil. Suggestion: Open your fish crap capsules in to a warm cup of water then sniff and sip if you dare.

Yeah I didn't know about doses when I heard about melatonin so I started with 10mg, I basically slept until 4pm and was a zombie the whole next day it really messed me up. Even 3mg gives me weird dreams and I sleep through a lot of my alarms.
That's hardcore

Disagree, try to find lowest effective dose, 300 mcg good place to start, see if it has desired effect (it does for many), and if not only then increase dose. Dietary supplements not as well regulated in the U.S. as drugs, despite products in the two categories often each having pharmacological effect, as melatonin certainly does. Much easier for marketers of supplements to increase dose for no other reason than to increase sales, since many consumers will think "moar is good" without realizing that side effects can appear/increase too. One common side effect of high melatonin dose is night sweats.
So you do not disagree with me then. This is exactly what I said! Start with the low dose and if it doesn't have the desired effect then gradually increase the dose .

Melatonin is endogenous in humans. If melatonin "canceled out" birth control, birth control wouldn't ever work for anyone.

I do not think that you can generalize the dosage for any vitamin or medicine. There is no such thing as the "average person" . The dosage for a 300 lb , 6' 5" male is going to be different that the dosage for a 112 lb, 5'2" female. Also different chemicals have different effects on different brains. I do agree that you should start with 3mg dose but if that isn't helping then there is no reason not to try 5 or 10 mg
Actually they are saying 0.3 mg. they were talking micrograms, not mili. And yeah there is some talk that goes around that less is better for some people... 0.5 mg is the lowest starting dose I've seen. Actual current dosing range goes up to 20mg. Typically we would give 3mg in the hospital. I take 12 mg every night. Anything more and it actually makes my brain get too loopy/dreamy and I have trouble falling asleep. It's extremely safe. Just start low, increment up, and figure out what works for you.

FYI: https://examine.com/supplements/melatonin/

"For regulating the sleep cycle, doses of melatonin between 500mcg (0.5mg) and 5mg seem to work. Start with 500mcg, and if it doesn't work, work up to 3-5mg. The benefits of melatonin are not dose-dependent - taking more will not help you fall asleep faster.

To help with sleep, take roughly 30 minutes before going to bed.

Growth hormone appears to spike slightly better at 5mg than 500mcg, although both doses are fairly effective."

He's being alarmist, but slowly work your way back down or stop taking it. I only take it as needed with the .25 to .3mg sublingually. Personally melatonin even at those doses, jolts me up in the middle of the night.
yeah, melatonin has other benefits than simply helping you fall asleep which is why I take a bigger dose than the piddling 3 mcg. People need to just figure out what amount works for them. Too much can make your brain squirrely and harder to fall asleep. But the whole less is more mantra needs to stop. Less isn't more for you. Less is what works for you. And more is what works for someone else. 3mg didn't do squat for me. I found the perfect dose for me at 12mg. And yes that's a perfectly safe amount. Real current dosing range guidelines go up to 20mg.

Cancel out birth control? No. There is absolutely no evidence that melatonin even actually interferes with birth control, let alone "cancel" it out. There is some lazy speculation out there and no actual hard data. Predicting outcomes based on incomplete understandings of physiological mechanisms is some old school, stupid stuff that doesn't get any real respect in medicine anymore. Because we know how complex the human system is and speculating what will happen is a fool's errand. Which is why we have to rely on real measured outcomes and preferably coming from double blind placebo controlled studies.

And as a hormone your body makes it's own melatonin naturally at bed time. For free!
