Go ahead and buy a phone outside of security updates!
Go ahead and buy a used phone ("near mint" = "who the f*** knows how much battery wear it's suffered") over a brand new one, just to get an extra 90 days security patches (which are flashable if you're that concerned). LMAO.
If you're not comfortable with incurring any risk, either don't get this phone, or get the unlocked bootloader version and change your plans to include loading a custom OS.

Probably a 64gb version. There is a 64gb difference and a price difference between the two.
I'd personally probably go for the 2 XL with the bigger battery and full-year warranty OEM warranty (at least it claims) since I expect the SD 835 vs 845 CPU differences will not be that noticeable (maybe if you were gaming or something). I also don't think Google frequently updated their camera hardware, so unless they hold back software features from older models (#Apple) then the cameras should be comparable as well with Night Sight, etc. Besides the Pixel 3's refurb state, it's mostly personal preference IMHO.
Articles like this are also helpful, though some of that sentiment may be due to sales numbers more than the phone itself:

And yes, either model will support CDMA or GSM. I'm on Tello's GSM now. I wouldn't worry about compatibility with the Pixel. You'll need a new Tello (GSM/T-Mobile) sim card when you switch.
