Anyone else just buy all the Kurosawas last week for 7.99 each? Sigh.
I bought Home Alone last November for $8, but at least it was in UHD. "I can't imagine that film going any lower," I said. Went on sale this past month for $5. Yet Christmas Vacation continues to hold solid at $10...for just HD. There is little rhyme or reason to these prices, but I refuse to pay more than $5 any longer, unless we're talking Disney. Then we're all over a barrel.
It's all good bro. I picked some titles up back then too and those have dropped since. Sometimes you win sometimes you lose. It's all part of SD. Thanks for sharing.
Amazing sale, very jelly. Wish this was offered from VUDU.
Vudu doesn't have a lot of these, especially the Chaplin, Kurosawa when I checked yesterday. Criterion might have an arrangement with Apple for a lot of these. Good news is that Apple TV is being included in most smart devices and TVs going forward. They have apps on the video game systems as well. Plus they will upgrade you to 4k when these get upgraded.
HOLY SMOKES, this is a sure-fire recipe for my going broke.
(Downside - most of these don't have the fancy-ass Criterion extras included on iTunes. Flipside : FIVE BUCKS.)
Is stalker worth owning? My concern with these movies is they are those watch once type of films.
Well… that's true for most movies. If Soviet era sci-fi is your thing then you'll probably like Stalker, it's one of the ones I'm considering. Solaris is another classic of that scene. $5 isn't horrible for a rental but if you watch it a few times over the years then you ended up with a bargain, right? And theoretically you may build up a large enough collection that you can kick the streamers to the curb and only pay for when something you really want to see is on. At least that's what I tell myself.
About 4K editions of these, that's up to Criterion but so far they haven't seemed very interested in UHD. Possibly because a lot of their catalog are older films and the source material may not be able to benefit from the added resolution.

I'm sure a lot of people bought stuff last week for $8 and are disappointed. I have a pretty strict rule about not paying more than 5 so I avoided it. Looking to buy a few now, though

There's also no commentary or other extras so what does it mean to be a Criterion version?
I'm not sure either, for Blue the web page lists[apple.com] the "Studio" as "The Criterion Collection" but there's nothing extra. No extra subtitles or audio track, the English is hard coded and that's it.
But it's not like it's available in a different version in iTunes.

Would also easily recommend Tampopo for $5. Took a couple of watches for me, but it's a very unique and entertaining film.
