Is It Necessary to have a Portable Jump Starter Pack in your Vehicle?

25 22 July 22, 2021 at 12:33 AM
Own a 2008 Chevy Cruze currently over 120,000 miles, had only one time that battery was drained due to let AC on for 2 hours with the car parked. Now it takes longer and longer to get it started.

Consulted a mechanic friend and it's kinda not worth it to get a brand new battery because we are planing to get a new car next year. Still worried about it and wonder if a jump start pack can make the situation better, or at lease we got a backup plan.

That thought came from an email talking about fanttik t8 apex jump start pack which I have never heard. Did look it up online https://fanttik.com/pages/t8-apex-overview ,the website looks neat tho.

It says pretty much works on any Vehicle up to 8.5L gas and it works as a 65W fast charge power bank as well. Got flashlight on it and some other features. Is it worth to buy? I mean for a jump start pack it seems pretty small, does it really work?

Seems to be an advertisement (pre-launch) not to be available 'till 7/30/2021.

Nothing fancy about what you posted really.... you can find these type of units on Amazon right now. I've had a Li-Ion units in our 2 cars for almost 5 years now. Before then were regular lead acid batteries which were of course a LOT bulkier and would discharge over time. That's not really an issue with the Li ion units.

I can say in the ~ 5 years I've had them, I've used one once and that was for someone else's car, not mine.

Link for similar unit:

Can't find the price of the one you linked to, but a new battery for your Cruze is likely to be around $100 at Costco or Sams club. A battery that is failing now and giving you difficulty in the warmer months is only likely to get much worse as it gets colder. I would replace the battery and be done with it. The battery jump packs work ok if your battery isn't too low. You don't want to be jumping your car every time you go to use it.

Agreed. If the battery is failing slowly right now, the jumping option isn't going to be viable. Just get a battery and have piece of mind.

1) this is definitely a plant.
2) as someone who recently needed a jump and a new battery, I was reminded that you should regularly check your jump starter's battery levels. Most of them require 30-50% charge in order to jump, and some of them need to be fully charged each jump. That could be problematic if you have a dying battery, needed to jump when leaving the home, and expect to need a jump on the way back.

A new battery is almost always a better investment than a jump starter. A C-Tek or noco brand charger / battery conditioner can be worth having around and has potential to stretch the life of the battery a bit.

I agree with the suggestion of getting a new battery. You're planning on getting a new car next year, that's a long time to have a car with a dying battery.

Also, I suggest you skip gm products of you're getting something newer. 120,000 miles is near the end for most Chevys nowadays. I suggest either Honda or Toyota for your next car. Yeah, you pay more but they last a real long time.

Just get a new car battery and be done with it.

That and I wonder how many of these jump start battery packs are catching on fire and burning down your car.

If you are tight on money check for a local used battery place. The one near me gives 90 day warranty and is about 50% off from new prices.

Didn't realize that was a thing, I don't suppose that's a chain place. Where do they get their batteries from - do the big stores take back cores, test and determine which batteries are really still good vs trash and sell them?

I usually use a coupon online for instore pickup, generally at Advance. Saves $15-20 usually.

Pretty sure that place is local but I'd think something like it exists in most metro areas.
Can't tell you where they get their stock from. They do want the core. Maybe rebuild ones?

I had one dud out of 5 or over the years. They replaced it with a good one.
