Thanks for posting. I'm doing a new build and want to use two 16GB modules. Now that Crucial is randomly manufacturing their 16GB modules in single rank and double rank configurations I'm not touching Crucial regardless of how much they lower the price.

Been waiting for a good ram deal for the next build and this is it. $75 for 3200 CL16 ram was all I was expecting, so to get 3600 CL16 with some bonus RGB is aces.

I picked up that Alienware deal around Memorial Day or whatever and these sticks are said to be compatible. I've been wanting 32GB of RAM as an upgrade.

Since there's no window in the Alienware case, meaning the RGB would be useless in that case, the White 32GB set (2x16GB) is also eligible for the coupon at $148.74 AC

Same coupon: EMCEYST55

I'm not up on all of the technicals but my understanding is that dual rank allows 2 way simultaneous communication between the processor & memory and with single rank only 1 direction of communication can occur at a time. There is a lot of discussion in various places (Reddit is one place, I think) on the issue. I have seen it reported in my searches that it can cause up to a 9% performance hit (I don't personally know for certain). My personal experience is that I have spoken with tech support at Crucial 3 or 4 times. They openly admit that on the 16GB modules they sometimes manufacture them in single rank and they sometimes manufacture them in dual rank configurations but for some odd reason they stock both versions under the same part number. On these 16GB modules you will never see a reference on their website or their resellers' website telling you which they have. You will simply get whatever they pull out of the storage bin.

For 8 GB modules it is assumed that they are single rank so if you install four 8GB modules the result will be 32GB of dual rank. Two modules of 16GB dual rank will result in 32GB of dual rank but two modules of 16GB single rank will result in 32GB of single rank.

Unfortunately, I ordered a 32GB kit (2x16) from Newegg and they were single rank. Newegg was great about allowing me to return them but this lead to several frustrating calls with Crucial trying to find out how I could go about obtaining dual rank 16GB modules. I finally gave up and will use memory from another manufacturer. This issue is specific to the Crucial 16GB modules by the way.

As an FYI it is quite easy to tell which version you have without even opening the package. After the part number seen through the package window printed on the actual module you should see one of the following suffixes:

M8FB1 = single rank
M16FE1 = dual rank

For certain, if the suffix begins with M8 you have single rank and if it begins with M16 you have dual rank.

Not usable in a lian li o11 mini with an asus b550 mobo, learned the hard way. Had to replace with team vulcan (32mm) and still had to move the ram sticks up a few mm, noctua is lying about clearance.
