is it only compatible with surface laptop? can I use it with my dell 2-in-1 laptop?

edit: answer my own question

the Surface Pen uses N-Trig, while the Dell supports stylus based on Wacom AES.

N-Trig is kind nish tech. It requires external batteries to work ("active pen"). HP line and Lenovo line use them for somhow. For example, it can be used at my hp x360.

Will this work on the Galaxy Flex2 Alpha? The laptop is so new, it's hard to find information. Says the "Samsung Active Pen" works, which doesn't exist yet at least. S-Pen obviously doesn't work.

I've been eyeing the Surface Pens since I've heard it's better than the one that is usually the most recommended, the Wacom Bamboo Ink. I just want to be sure it works or how I can tell.

The reason the Surface Pen uses a battery is because it also uses Bluetooth for some functions.

I use this for my SurfaceGo2, it's really nice and I have used Edge to fill out forms by hand on PDFs that don't have the interactive fields as well as sending signed PDFs. Use it to click and tap on stuff when I don't want to have the keyboard attached, have used this to sketch drawings with the kids, they really like the speed at which they can draw and erase.

Downsides are the price, but I guess $50 is a good deal considering I paid $100 and don't regret it, there have been artist using this pen and they prefer other options, I think they are right, it's not a good solution nor implementation for drawing applications, but for casual navigation and sketching it is perfect.

Not all touchscreen displays are compatible with digital pens, and not all pens are compatible with all displays. It's a mess, every company wants to reinvent their own wheel to sell their own products, they are all greedy mother farkers.

Everything has to be compatible, that's the thing. They have different "standards", different technologies, they are not really an all-in-one or fits-all kinda thing.

We could get into details but your best bet is to see which pens are compatible with your laptop in the manufacturer's website.

Thanks for the reply! It's a brand new dell inspiron 5515 touch. I"ve been googling and looking at reddit and can't find any concrete answers as to how I can even find out (IE looking at my device manager)

I have a Bamboo Ink pen for my Surface Pro 7, it literally works well but the palm rejection on OneNote is a hit or miss compared to Apple Pencil and S-Pen. Does anyone know if the Surface pen has a better palm rejection?

argh!!! I just got a couple extra pens last week at $69 each (ice blue)...

in for black i guess though I don't usually get black because it's so easy to lose them. a bright color is easy to find.

I'm an hobby artist and I ink pretty much every day for a few hours and it lasts so long on a single AAAA battery. I did buy a small pack of AAAA Amazon basic batteries but haven't really used them (only 1 out of the pack). Since the batteries last so long, I prefer it over constantly recharging a pen.

I tried some third party pens because the Microsoft ones are pricey (pricey for the Windows world). But you have to change your pressure curves if you go third party as the Microsoft-tuned pressure curves don't match so the stroking is much harder with the third-party ones I tried (you have to press harder to get the same effect as the Microsoft pen). I didn't want to go through the trouble of changing all my software for the new pens so I went back to the Microsoft ones.

I bought a couple the other week because I misplaced my Microsoft pen and grabbed one of my third-party ones and remembered why I didn't like the third-party ones... So those few days while waiting for my order to come in was excruciating because I had to stroke quite differently for my art.

I guess now I can have a couple pens at work and the rest between my bag and at home.
