I'm a little confused about the illustrations....they say they're Tolkein's (and the maps that are well know to any previous reader certainly are) but it also shows watercolor images in the Amazon reviews, that are decidedly NOT Tolkien's (they look like they're from a different edition, one that I have which is three hardbound volumes with art by (Alan Lee? Brian Froud? Someone along those lines), which were done after the movies (many are based on the visualizations created for the movies. As far as I know, Tolkien didn't do illustrations like these. I assume this is part of the usual issue with Amazon where they lump reviews for multiple related things into one glob of commentary. Just be aware.

*edit: yes, the watercolor illustrations showing up in the amazon reviews section are from the 2013 or earlier version, and are by Alan Lee, not Tolkien.**

Ooh, the illustrations are by Tolkien himself -- I looked it up, and the announcement says there are 30 of Tolkien's illustrations plus a fold-out map.

I want this badly but have vowed not to add to my physical bookshelf. Had 4 moves in 2 years plus water damage. Most of my books survived but can't have another pep-talk with myself on the importance of perspective.

Sorry if I wasn't clear....my comment was that if someone went to the linked amazon page, you will see in the reviews lots of illustrations from another edition. This is because Amazon lumps reviews from multiple editions in one review page. I was trying to indicate that the gorgeous watercolor art shown in many of the reviews is not from this edition. It's from previous editions. It was just a little confusing on the Amazon page. I fully expect the known Tolkein art (his maps, doodles, a a few really beautiful Rings pieces) to be part of this edition. The other art you may see on the Amazon page, however, is not his art (it's from an artist named Alan Lee, from a prior edition). Tolkein may not have been as accomplished a watercolorist as Lee, but he did have some great work (you can google "Tolkein art" and see some of his paintings). I hope those make it into this edition. Looks like there's another book that talks specifically to his art (https://www.amazon.com/exec/obido...raipick-20) and yuo can see more here and at the links it contains https://www.brainpickings.org/201...lustrator/
