Good for making holes on metal. Let's say you want to install a soap pump into your sink and need a circular hole or if you need to drill a screw into metal, you could use something like this to get a decent sized hole.

In case that's a real question, these are fantastic for drilling holes in thin metal stock.

I got one of these a while back at this price to drill some holes in a old keg to make it into a kettle. It worked much better than the cheap Amazon Chinese equivalent.

See Adam Savage's most recent video on his favorite tools. He says there is no appreciable difference between the cheap and expensive step drills. If you're doing thousands of holes, yes. But even for him he says the Harbor Freight ones are fine.

I did a quick search to see what these were going for and saw them New for $20 on ebay...if anyone is curious...https://www.ebay.com/itm/255026688536

EDIT- This one on ebay isn't as good as the better M35 grade cobalt HSS variant.
