There absolutely is a grind in the 7-9 book range, but it's worth powering through. Especially when you get to the Brandon Sanderson written books (last 3).
I appreciate the massive spoiler.
Ok deal, picked up 4 and 5. I'm almost finished with one and I'm hooked.

Wonder if the whole series will go on sale as Amazon gets closer to launching their live action series

I hope George RR Martin has the good sense to get all his notes in order like Jordan so that Sanderson or someone will be able to finish the Game of Thrones series when he inevitably kicks the bucket.

Many think book 4 is arguably the best. There is the "grind" you have to go through in the middle books. I've reread the series many times, with not being able to get through the grind. Each time, I get farther. Maybe one day I will finish the series. I can't wait for the Amazon series though.
I feel like there's grind through the whole thing, unless you really love reading details about every article of clothing every person wears.

Also, Rand's "revelation" about why the universe matters is the most trite and stupid thing ever.

It starts to bog down in book 7, hits it's slowest speed in book 8, begins to recover in book 9, and is fully back to speed in book 10.

And the thing is that those slower books are just fine. They just aren't at the high level you had come to expect.

Seems like every epic fantasy writer has a slow patch at some point. This is it for Jordan. And it isn't as bad as the slow book from the Game of Thrones series. Which is also a great series, despite the slow book (and still no ending).

Just stick with it. You'll be glad you did.

By the time you're on your 3rd or 4 re-read, you'll still feel the slow-down, but it won't bother you very much.

Very simply, it's the best epic fantasy series ever.
If you have to do 3-4 rereads to not be bothered, it's shit. Which this story really became. Also, nyaneve or whatever her name is, is the single most annoying character in all of literature and should get a nice healthy dose of "shut the fark up you condescending, know it all bitch". She's worse than Cersi, only she's supposed to be a good guy...

Indeed. Said repetition doesn't just apply to every stitch of clothing every time someone reenters the page. It goes for ethnic stereotypes/tics. Personality traits/tics. And even to an exasperating amount plot device. At some point an editor should have stepped in and reeled him in. Unfortunately it was his wife and apparently she didn't have the heart to say "maybe we shouldn't have a character captured/rescued for an Nth time? Some of them N times? How about we try a new direction or cut this one? And how about if we don't tell the reader that women from XYZ are fast and loose. I think they get it now." So I blame her as much as him. I won't say the series is BAD but there are certainly some glaring issues. If read early in your reading life maybe some of this flies by without being distracting which could be one reason that would explain why so many people have this nostalgia and love for the series. Having said all that I still do recommend it to most people if they are just getting into fantasy and are avid readers. Even if they don't read every book of it. If nothing else it builds a base for tropes that are bounced off of or subverted in newer works. I think most people just want to be distracted by popcorn reading though and if that's your thing then this can fill up a year for you and you might even love it. I however struggled. Especially recently when I decided to go back through it a second time to make sure I wasn't just having some sort of episode where my synapses were misfiring. I will not be making a third trip through Rand land.

This is the first I'd heard of a live action TV show being made! Thanks for the info!

Quote from PabloZ :
For those audiobook listeners, the Add Audible Narration price is $7.49 for four of the books (and $8.49 for the other--I think) for a total of $12.48 each for the audiobook version (plus the ebook). Not a deal relative to the Audible annual plan deal ($99 or so), but a decent deal relative to the price of the standard monthly Audible charge of $15.
Should note that these Audible prices are available at any time once you own the Kindle ebook and not just at time of purchase.

I found these summaries (link below) very convenient when I re-read the series. Would probably be fine for a first timer in the more tedious books (I think 7-10 as others mentioned, but can't remember exactly which ones were the worst). I think all spoilers are marked as such.

When I did my re-read, I used the summaries on a chapter by chapter basis, based on what was going on and what character the point of view was from. Even the worst books have some really good chapters.

When you have a story of this scope, it's going to have some high points and low ones. That said, I re-read it in 2019, in anticipation of the Amazon show which is finally going to debut in November (starring Rosamund Pike as Moraine Damodred). The show got delayed because of Covid, but be on the lookout for the marketing push to take off in the next 30 days.

The world building, main storyline narrative arc and many other aspects of this series are amazing, and set the standard for modern epic fantasy. I was never a fan of Jordans writing style, and the pacing suffers in books 7-10, but don't let that stop you from reading an incredible series. Jordan spends too much time describing the superficial while much more significant plot points almost slide by unnoticed. It can be maddening on an initial read through, but when you reread the series you start catching them and there are several "holy crap" moments. There's a reason the series has sold over 90 million copies and many people have read them all multiple times.

Book 4 The Shadow Rising is a very common pick for one of the best in the series (I would love to say why, but no spoilers - suffice to say it establishes this world as unique in the fantasy genre). The Great Hunt (book 2) is when the series really becomes its own story. I'm glad both are included in this sale.

Also check with your local library and/or the overdrive system. I got them all that way. Took forever to read/listen to them all since they are 20+ hours each.
