So do you use your fingers instead to provide the "cordless" readings?

There was a recent recall on *some* of the Klein NCVT-1 testers.
Just double check the one(s) you receive to make sure you have one not listed on the recall.
The affected/recalled testers have a date code ending in H7.
If yours doesn't end in H7, then it's ok.

Made in China, probably worth the $30, but the $8 shipping kills it. Probably better to buy the very similar Southwire test kit [amazon.com] for the everyday price of $30 delivered, or wait for a sale. Or better, shop for an auto ranging meter.

I have one that was recalled. Just shipped it back. Pretty nice and tester. IIRC the reason for the recall was the power button was faulty and would turn the tester off. Never had any issues with mine tho and it would beep when turned off.

What would you recommend in the sub 100$ category? I just bought the Klein mm700 and am questioning my decision as a DIYer/backyard mechanic

Obviously, you had some idea of what you needed and did your homework before handing over a $100 for a meter that is probably more than a "DIYer/backyard mechanic" would ever need/use. Right? Of course you did with the 1,000v ability as a mad scientist that is hooking up siht in series to obtain anything over 240v residential line voltage, but limited to 10 amps that cannot test a decent miter saw. Smilie Nevertheless, the auto ranging is great, but that can be found on $50 retail meters.

Most DIY folks can do well with a $10 meter for AC/DC and spend their money on individual items such as a remote continuity tester, non-contact, tracers, clamp ohm meters, etc. Only you know what you need and if already having buyer's remorse, I would return or cancel it to then make a list of what you need/want in a meter before shopping.
Why amps to test a miter saw? What are you looking for that you can't test using resistance? Obviously a clamp on ammeter is always preferable in those applications. I don't know of many wired meters that test over 10A even my Fluke 87 doesn't. I assume it's intended for low voltage DC uses. And while 1KV is overkill it's likely these also get sold in other countries where they do have higher incoming voltage. This and a clamp on ammeter should do the trick for most diyers. I wouldn't trust a $10 meter for anything except checking alkaline batteries, anything more and you're trusting something made as cheap as possible with your life.

Maybe I've misunderstood the intent of your comment, if so I apologize but still respectfully disagree with some of your advice.

.

Amp draw, or total amp draw for a circuit.... As an example, the DeWalt 735x planer, or the 780 miter saw pull considerably more than their rating on load. You may want to know at what amps a breaker trips for it's rating that you are going to have a hell of time doing by yourself with a 10amp max meter and probes by 'resistance.'

We were discussing Hafro's $100 mm700 and not the OP that is fine for the average homeowner/DIYer ---- if not overpriced with delivery charges for what it is. My suggestion was to buy a cheaper meter with money left over to buy other essentials. You know, like a remote continuity tester for finding a short in auto or home, etc.

too busy to use Google I see..?
https://www.kleintools.com/recall/ncvt1

It has recently come to our attention that one of our products, the NCVT-1 NONCONTACT VOLTAGE TESTER, has a potential safety issue that Klein Tools would like to rectify. The on/off button of the NCVT-1 is intended to be pressed down and then released. If the button remains depressed during the power on or power off cycle, the tip of the tool remains illuminated in green, indicating the tool is "ready to detect voltage," when it is not.

The important bit, that nobody will be able to answe
This recall involves Klein Tools Non-Contact Voltage Tester with model numbers NCVT1 bearing date codes ending H7. The product was also sold in variations and kits listed above, all bearing date codes ending in H7.
