I'm on my second replacement thinkpad p15 and they all throttle(d) during burn-in... Even when I enable "ultra-performance mode" in the bios. A 10th gen chip locked to 3.2 ghz... 🙃. I hope AMD H cpus are better.

You'd assume that gaming machines have the beefiest cooling, but if even their workstation machines cant keep up...

Yup, it's higher RAM, higher storage and better screen for $350 extra pretax.

The better size format is debatable since some people prefer 17 inch laptops over their 15/16 inch counterparts, due to better thermals (in this case, both have the same cooling method, Coldfront 3.0, but the 17 inch likely has better ventilation due to larger chassis) and larger, but admittedly worse, screen. Having any additional edge in thermals is super important for a gaming laptop so that it can run at best performance without throttling or wearing down the internal components.

The 15/16 inch form factor is a lot nicer for mobility/on-the-go though, and also when one wants to use the laptop on one's lap or in bed or something. It also fits a lot more comfortably in smaller bags and backpacks.

It's easily worth it. It's $350 on a device you'll probably keep for years. It's a better display, more storage, more RAM, better build, better resale value, etc. Everything I've read everywhere points to the Pro being substantially better.

That is unless you want a 17". Personally, I don't think 17" is worth the inherent downsides in terms of portability. But if you want one, that's a different matter.

It also depends on intended usage. I replaced my desktop five years ago with a MSI laptop. It works well and I enjoy the quietness very much. My L5 17" is ordered as a replacement of my MSI laptop. I need more RAMs and plan to replace the RAM with 64 GB. Mobility is not an issue for me because I have other slim laptops for travel. I hope the 17" chassis allows better thermal.

Component wise, it appears that a max-out L5 Pro is discounted more than a max-out L5 17". That means it could be discounted more, hence worth more. When I ordered my 17", I didn't have time to look at L5 Pro. After I was done with my order, the deal already expired. So I am glad that I didn't have to face the tough decision Smilie

I'm the same. I ditched desktops 10 years ago when I got my maxed out Dell L502… I'm not a PC gamer per se, but I like to have some beef on my system, AND I don't want a huge tower sucking power and blowing heat in my office.

I have a Legion 17" with i7-8750H and 2070 MaxQ now, hooked to dual stacked 34" LG Ultrawides now and think I jumped on this deal because of FOMO… I'm not impressed with my current processor and don't mind if the screen isn't the best, because I don't use it.

PS: I paid like $1600 for the Dell L502X 😂 and it had a 2nd Gen i7, GT 540 2gb, and Windows 7… This is way more power and during chip shortages!! FOMO!!

I ordered the 17" because I didn't even know the pro was an option and I rushed to buy one. I wish I got the pro just for the better aesthetics and screen lol. I've been looking, but it appears impossible do a 2k or 4k screen replacement for the legion 5 17". Does anyone know any possibility? I guess I'll keep the 17" and take it apart and remove the anti glare layer to get a much sharper image for working. I just wish it was 2k at minimum. My 15" hp is 4k lol. I don't care about refresh as I use it for work. Thanks if you know any alternative swaps

I, too, got the email from Lenovo asking me to be patient with their processing.

I ordered a full kitted Legion 5 Pro 16", and I am still showing a Dec 7th arrival.

Burn in is putting the machine through its paces by running programs which purposefully stress all the components, generating as much heat as possible. A machine which is under engineered or has defective components will halt or throw an error message during a burn in.

While running prime 95, linpack, or pcmark, my thinkpad p15 went to 99-100 degrees C nearly instantly, and within a few minutes it went from its highest clock of 4.8 ghz down to 3.2 ghz. For perspective, my p51 from 3 years ago with a 7820hq could hold 3.9 ghz all day long.

So much for "ultra performance mode" lol
