I don't see where an Ethernet cable can be plugged in. Is this laptop wifi only? sorry a newbie question.

Doesn't have Ethernet built in. It's common on these slimmer laptops as the Ethernet port is fairly large. You just need a USB to Ethernet dongle 10$ on Amazon.

Does anyone know how this compares to the Dell Inspiron 15 with the 5500u processor from last week? Ordered that one for $449 before tax, bit won't arrive for another 10 days.

edit: I see this one has 12gb ram vs 8gb. 512gb hd vs 256.. and a supposedly brighter screen on this one. Are there any advantages to the Dell?

This is a great deal for a laptop! +1

The RAM configuration gives me pause; however, as with this model, the maximum is only 12 GBs RAM. And... you won't get dual-channel because the module sizes are mismatched. EEK!

Common misconception. It's called asynchronous dual-channel, and most computers support it over the past 2-3+ years. You'll only get 2x4gb dual channel on this computer because the 4gb chip is soldered. Even if you upgrade the sodimm to 16gb or 32gb (assuming the motherboard supports it) the dual channel portion can't get any bigger on this laptop.

Only differences I see are:

11th Gen Intel Core i7 vs Ryzen 5
Wifi 6 vs 802.11
$699 vs 499

I am not a heavy gamer and use computer for work (spreadsheets, PPT, etc.) I dont believe I have a Wifi 6 router but if I purchased the 5 I would look into upgrading.

Not really. For office work, you wouldn't notice any difference btw the two. Both are considered plenty fast for office work.

No. You get dual channel for the first 4 GB.

Dell is better. Has usb-c charging and alt mode for display.

Any thoughts on build quality between the two?

Well, ram and SSD are upgradable on the Dell. It's a lot more future proof than this laptop. If you are planning on upgrading, then I guess go with this IdeaPad.

This beats that Dell all day. The lack of USB C charging hardly makes up for all that you get. And 12 gig ram......if you have to ask, you will likely never need more than the 12GB ram. You might swap the 8 gig for a 16gig bar...for bragging rights. But I have to admit that I have been chuckling.. people talking about adding ram like they will be using this laptop 20 years from now.. As far as build...my experience has always been that Big Blue makes the better PC. (Big Blue. Aka IBM aka Lenovo) for anyone not aware of the PC lineage.

IBM has no relationship to Lenovo. They sold their lines more than 15 years ago. Lenovo has a wide range of build quality depending on the line.
