I received the A3 Prime from a previous swap and that phone wouldn't work on anything except Visible. Is this one better and usable anywhere else? I know they are all unlocked but I think the a3 is missing some key bands (I couldn't even get it to work on Tracfome/VZW)

That's not necessarily true unless something has changed. I swapped some old phones for a few A7's about a year or so ago and used them on an At&t Freeup lines. Ya gotta install the 4G Switcher app. The A7 is actually a decent little budget phone with a great design and solid build quality.
The review is old and locking state therein is not relevant to the Visible/Verizon model. This is not locked, but will be useless for other carriers due to missing band and VoLTE capabilities.

Even the Zte Blade 10 prime did not work unless you force network mode

It's what I did. Technically it worked but it was super spotty at best. IIRC Texts/call notifications would only connect when the screen was on.
So basically you don't know if you're getting texts/calls until it's too late unless your phones screen was on 24/7. This was with a Tmobile sim
I tried to use one of those apps to get my A3 Prime to work on FreeUp also and no luck. What mode did you folks pick to get it to work? I believe all those apps just access the *4636 menu anyway...
If this phone was used as a wifi only device, it would work quite well. Do not expect it to work at all (without major limitations or hurdles to jump through) on any network outside of Visible

I just checked my Visible A7 that I'm using on At&t. I have the preferred network set to LTE/UMTS auto (PRL) in the 4G switcher app. Been using it on At&t for well over a year.

Looks like you need to port in a number from an eligible carrier though.
