A7c has much better AF and a fully articulating LCD. They share the same sensor, so IQ is the same. The a7iii has better ergonomics, dual memory slots and a better EVF. I picked the A7c.

As someone who switched from Canon to Sony by getting the A7iii and then later picked up the A7Riii, I have to say, for all the mud slinging going on here regarding the UI and from the Canon forums before I made the switch, it's really a non issue. You literally need 20-30 minutes to set up and customize "My Menu" and the Fn select buttons and custom buttons for your flow, and you never need to touch it again. It becomes second nature.

12MP is not a bug, it's a feature.

The camera is primarily designed for video, even though it has the full suite of Sony's still photography features.

Video has a far higher data processing requirements than stills. The higher the resolution, the more data that needs to be processed. The higher the data processing requirements, the more heat is created and the greater battery requirements.

The A7S III is a native 4K camera. For most video imagery, the camera is 4K in and 4K out. Most full frame cameras with more than 10 or 12MP resolution have to greatly degrade the image quality in order to record 4K video. They either crop in using only the center portion of the sensor, or throw away light that hits the sensor with pixel or line binning.

The A7S III uses the full readout of the sensor, and as native 4K, has low image processing overhead, creating low amounts of heat, resulting in long battery life, while not needing an internal fan. It has fast imaging pipeline, so provides low rolling shutter. And with it's comparatively massive sensels / photosites (image sensor pixels), provides exception low light capability. None of that would be possible in a similarly sized camera with a higher resolution sensor.

Pro stills photographers have compared the stills photos from the A7S III to Sony's higher resolution cameras. It's generally impossible to tell the difference unless pixel peeping or looking at poster sized enlargements. A number of photographers who largely deliver Facebook, Twitter, and other digital deliverables use the camera for both video and stills.

TLDR - 12MP is perfect for 4K video, making for higher quality video imagery in a small lightweight package. And if the photos are used for digital delivery, provides outstanding stills quality as well.

Can someone please post Adorama screenshots of the Edu prices on the 20mm F/1.8 and NP-FZ100 battery? Trying for a price match, but don't have Adorama Edu.

If one plans on hanging a big zoom lens on this, I strongly encourage a visit to a camera shop as the ergonomics with a longer reach lens sucks big time with it being very front heavy with minimal grip (too small and shallow).
One could make a case for going with the A6400 and saving $800 (non EDU), unless one thinks a FF is worth the extra $.

I hear ya. I'm not trying to argue. Just didn't like the "serious" photographer's comment. Everyone has different needs from their equipment. I'm in the same boat, I've probably got close to 70k photos in my LR Catalog, and only about 700 were shot at 1/8000. It's only about 1% but for me, not having 1/8000 on my work cameras is a dealbreaker. For some of the portraits I take at the beach, I'm at 1/8000 sec. I can't even get to 1.4 because it's too over-exposed. Also, iso 50 isn't native. It's basically the same as lowering your exposure in post.
I'll try to post a link to an example where I'm at 1/8000 / f1.6 / iso50

I took the "serious" verbiage from the original poster who said 1/8000 is an issue.

Nice picture but (1) electronic shutter would have worked fine (which this can do at 1/8000) and (2) you could easily increase the exposure of that shot - it's the direct sun that is going to be blown out and it's blown out anyway, (3)You could use an ND filter if (1) and (2) didn't work.

The lack of Sony's improved real time AF tracking on the a7iii is a much bigger limitation than the a7c having to use the electronic shutter to get 1/8000.

Lower MP means bigger pixels which means better low light performance. The A7Siii is a video focused camera. 12 MP is enough for 4k video and allows for better low light video. It's a tool for a specific purpose. The A7iii is meant to be the all-around camera.

is the switch from partial to full electronic shutter automatic or is there a menu setting that needs to be flipped?

that 20mm f1.8 is tempting me for some reason.. even though i have the Tamron f2.8 and this is not a focal length i use much. something about the quality of that lens and deal.. i think i should get samyang 24mm f1.8 first..

It's an option you need to enable on my a7riii. I'm not 100% on the a7c, but I'd wager it's the same. You can always add that option to your custom function menu so it's easy to access.

Thank you, I appreciate that.
Unfortunately, the electronic shutter would not work in my situation since I was using flash.
Increasing the exposure was not an option either since it would result in more of the sky being blown out and unrecoverable.
I do have ND filters, but transferring them every time I change a lens is a pain and sometimes kills the flow of the shoot.
So yeah, different needs for different folks I guess.

Fair enough I suppose but the number of times you (1) have to shoot at 1/8000, (2) with a flash, and (3) don't have time to twist on an ND filter, puts it into the pretty extreme in terms of niche/minor limitations. It would be very low on my list of limitations with this camera.

Absolutely, It's totally niche. Just one of those shots I like to have in my back pocket during a session.
Good talk! Peace

What is the a7ii lacking that you think spending another $1600+tax will fix?
