Is there a way to add 3rd party apps or play videos files from USB stick so I don't need to run my rpi all the time with plex server?
Pretty sure WebOS is locked down as far as 3rd party apps are concerned. On my LG B8 running WebOS, I have no trouble playing video files from USB sticks, with subtitle streams and all. WebOS does have the Plex app though...
If compared to Roku options, I'd say the biggest benefit is the availability of wired ethernet streaming for those who have that option. You can't get a Roku with wired ethernet connectivity at the $15-$25 price range. Don't get me wrong, I love my Roku TV, but I just prefer the reliability of wired connectivity when available.
Bought this like four years ago & never hooked it up. Beginning to wonder if SD is more harmful than helpful to my bank account...
As a 49 year old man who bought the music lights for my car off slick deals yesterday, yea, SD can be bad for the wallet. Wonder how it will handle old school Metallicaโฆ..

WebOS is pretty limited. If it has the app you want, then you're golden. If not, there's no way to add it without using another device. I would love Android or Linux compatibility, but it's nowhere close.
Disregarding the bluray functionality, this is basically a WebOS streaming device with the added benefit of having wired connectivity. The 1080p limitation makes it perfect for an older guest room TV. LG's WebOS is quite polished compared to most built-in smart TV OS, and for $15 this is a no-brainer if there's any in stock...
And it plays mkv from the usb drive. Can connect an ext harddrive to watch hours of movies.

Can play from usb stick, but no side loading or other "apps" then what they come with.

And it's not 4K!! Pretty useful information for anyone that has 4K hardware and maybe, I don't know, wants to play their 4K blurays??
If this was a 4K player, I'd run to every Walmart in the state and buy them all.
