Hello -

Can you suggest possible best ways to sell an excellent 2017 Mercedes Benz GLC - where I would get better price and somewhat safer transaction? The car is in excellent condition and has less mileage.

I suppose this could be a generic how and best ways to sell used car as well.

P.S. Posting here, but if there is a better forum, please move this thread to it. Thanks!

Unless you want less than $5 for it, you can't sell it here.

I have been trying to sell a used car for months and have the same issue. In my experience, the online buying sites (carvana, kbb, etc.) offers are garbage (at most 60% of what the private party value is). Similar more or less to what you will get from a dealer if you try to sell it to them. In other words, a waste of time unless you just want to get ripped off and want to get rid of the car fast.

EBay charges hefty fees (including a listing fee for autos) and their listing is only good for a couple of weeks so i never bothered with them.

Then there are sites like autotrader. You do get to list for $50 until the car sells. In theory they filter out spam. In reality, what I seem to get is a bunch of losers either spamming you with bogus email addresses (don't know why but it seems like a lot of them are gmail or yahoo address following the same naming pattern and which never bother to reply...my guess is they want you to call their number so they can scam you) or are just people who are not serious. Of the half dozen people I had who were actually real and came to look at the car, only one was serious imo and that one decided not to buy because the wife did not like it that much. And this is despite listing the car for about $600 less than what the value is estimated at.

Bottom line, selling a car private party is a pita. There are just too many idiots out there.

Indeed selling a car on your own is a PITA unless its a car that is in demand and how much you want for it. I remember when my parents had an old Ford Escape 2006 the dealership low balled them big time to trade it in for a new car they were buying (checked it on KBB), but I told my parents its going to be a hassle getting rid of this car so they just traded it in.

Easiest way is just listing it on places one of the more popular places (if you have one) is facebook market in my area. You can also go to your local dealership (since right now a lot of dealers are buying used cars) and can see what they are offering. Ebay, Carvana are another few. Put a for sale sign on your car and just be patient and go from their.

A friend listed it on FB Market place for me awhile ago (I refuse to use that evil thing and he was trying to help me out). That was even worse than Autotrader for the number of losers imo (which did not really surprise me lol). He would get numerous messages and when he replied would get no answer back from most. Like a bunch of impulsive idiots see the pictures, inquire if it is still available and then forget about it in a few hours or change their mind. A couple replied and asked if I would accept a price well below the listed price (which was already under value...and why would I do that as I can sell it to dealer for that?). Just another waste of time.

Right now I am just waiting out Autotrader. Ebay's fees are too high and they are seller hostile.

I think I might stick a for sale sign on it...that can't really hurt though the only ones going to see it are my neighbors as I rarely drive the thing since I use my main car all the time.

So far I contacted Carvana, Car Max and local dealers but Carnava comes better so far.

I will try FB, Post a Sign etc. but the problem I see is that how do you complete a large money transaction ($30k+) and safest ways to accept money (i.e. bank deposit etc.) before I hand over the car, titles etc.

Cash only imo. Bank checks and money orders can all be forged. Yeah with that amount it is going to be a pita for the buyer, but unless you want to risk being scammed, I do not see a way around it.

I would also strongly suggest you do the transaction\turn the title and keys over at your local bank so you can deposit the money immediately without having to transport it and then accompany the buyer to the dmv office where you can remove the plates and do whatever other paperwork may be required and the buyer can do the same. Check with your local DMV as to what the procedures are so there is no foul up.

My 2 cents.

I think this is one place where crypto can actually be useful, large dollar private transactions with some risk to both buyer and seller. Buyer doesn't have to carry a huge stack of cash and the seller knows that the transaction has been processed before handing over the keys. Of course there are other risks, but at least those are a little less.

Used FB before. I think it depends on area and quality of customers.

Likely true use case. Blockchain comes in handy where each transaction gets validated.
