They will often stay with a drug that they've had positive results with. It's also possible that they are in the minority and one drug just works better van a supposedly a superior treatment. Or maybe back in the old days their insurance company would only cover Zaditor, not Patanol, and they stuck with it and never tried Pataday.

That being said, the active ingredient in Pataday (olopatadine) works far better than the active ingredient in Alaway (ketotifen fumarate) with approximately half as many reports of side effects (10% for Pataday versus 18% for Alaway).
