Possibly stupid question, but can you use saltwater for something like this instead of chlorine?
Not stupid at all. You can get a saltwater generator for sure and hook it up. I have this pool and have to strongly suggest a bigger filter too. You can use the included one but it will need to run for longer than Bestway advises and still won't be completely crystal clear. You can generally use Intex parts no issue, and if you want to hook up a vacuum, get the Intex over the wall skimmer. Then get a $3 pool vacuum adapter from Ace and a hose clamp to attach it to the clear hose from the skimmer. If you want to go pro and get an in wall skimmer (and don't mind cutting into your liner) then you can go to Trouble Free Pool and lots of people have guides on doing that conversion. Those are best. If you do this then they come with a vacuum attachment when you go with Hayward for the skimmer.
If you use the included solar heater, be prepared to run the filter way longer than Bestway advises. The solar filter cuts output dramatically as compared to the stated filtration rate. The included chlorine dispenser (if you don't shell out for a generator) only holds 1" tabs and you need to stay super on top of it. I simply switched to dosing daily/every other day with liquid chlorine bleach. Much more precise and straightforward.
Don't rely on any old kit, get a FAS-DPD kit. You need to carefully tune the pH, stabilizer (CYA), and chlorine levels. Trouble Free Pool has a complete and top notch guide to this. Don't let the pool store sell you on a ton of unnecessary chemicals! It's their job.
The amount of customization you can do to these pools is almost limitless, including:
1. Hard plumbing if you want a cleaner look and more valves to custom control port usage. You can get stronger suction by closing off one port, but Bestway does not make this easy.
2. Robot vac (we use the Xtremepower US from Amazon)
3. Saltwater chlorinator.
4. Filter upgrade.
5. Partial hard plumb to get a better backwash adapter line.
6. Better stairs.
7. I can recommend you get a real pole, brush, and net. Bestway includes crap ones.
8. Water features.
9. Lights (recommend looking at waterproof wireless charge ones on Amazon, we got a four pack for $50) to make it more fun and comfortable to swim at night. Don't fall for the Intex $50 ones.
10. So much more.
I also recommend, if you can afford it, Dr. Dryden's Activate glass filtration media as opposed to sand. It gives almost DE (the gold standard) clarity and is completely compatible with sand filters.
I bought the 2020 solid grey version and have had it up for two seasons now. Def agree with everything Redmaxx said, this is a great pool for the price, included filter and solar heater are underpowered, but like he said if you run it 12+ hours a day, which I do and backwash frequently it keeps it pretty clear.
I also have the Intex skimmer and the intex ZX 300 vacuum (don't get the cheaper intex vacuum, this filter pump isn't powerful enough) which both work like a charm if you plug one of the filter inputs. My pool came with plugs that fit directly in the pool outlets and the intex skimmer adapter screwed directly on to the bestway pool outlet. The intex robot hose adapter similarly screws right on to the bestway pool inlet.
The cover this comes with is basically useless because it doesn't stretch out enough to fit over all the edges unless you leave it out in the sun for hours. It's also just annoying to take on and off. I have trees surrounding my pool and for the most part the robot and skimmer get all the leaves and bugs without me having to cover it.
As long as you maintain the right chemistry (which can get expensive, I've probably spent at least $120 on chlorine, stabilizer, algaecide, ph up, and hardness up this season) the water stays crystal clear. I have had a little bit of green algae but by brushing the walls every few days right before a chlorine shock, it hasn't become a problem.
The solar heater is surprisingly durable and heats the pool by 1 degree an hour if it's in direct sunlight. I am adding another intex solar heater and a solar cover to keep it warm, it has stayed above 70 and gotten into the low 80s a few times since April but we have had a hot summer in CT. I'm hoping the bestway filter 1500gph pump can handle the second heater but if not I will probably upgrade to the intex 2800gph one which is around $250.
I've also added some string lights around the edges and battery powered floating lights which are great at night. If you want a fun party pool for under $1000 this is it. It's super easy to assemble, maintain, and upgrade and you can't go wrong with Costco.
"Item may be available in your local warehouse for a lower, non-delivered price."
Anyone know what the in-store price is?
Also, since kids started school already, I might not get a lot of use out of it this year so if I buy it now (to avoid potential price surge and availability) but don't use it and if prices go down next year, I'm assuming I can still return it (brand new/unopened) through Costco?
