I only have 4 zones in my yard, but want a capable smart sprinkler controller. Rachio's equivalent 8 zone controller currently costs $50 more than the 12 zone, which doesn't make any sense. Would it make sense to just buy this controller even though I'd only be utilizing 33% of its physical capacity?

I'm in the same situation, but I think I will buy it since it's rated as one of the best controllers. I would not want to buy one with 4 zones at a similar cost and it not be as good.

I'm starting out with planning my own sprinkler system. I'm going to trench for 5 sprinklers initially. Any good deals on valves/valve sets compatible with this rachio?

Great deal! I just paid the same for the 3e model 3 weeks ago. I have a 6 zone and Rachio is absolutely amazing, easy to use and highly highly recommend grabbing this one.

I've had one for a few years and it's been great.

I think almost all valves should work with the controller. 2 wire hook up for each valve. I have rain bird valves on my system.

Define easy. You need to run household current to it and then wire it to the valves. If you can mount it inside (garage or something similar) then you don't have to worry much about moisture. If you're mounting it outdoors I personally would recommend an enclosure. Rachio sells one that fits the controller.

Lightning storm fried our R2 and this is the only one that is fairly decent value; can't go back to an analog with fall reseed around the corner

Also make use of the rebate program - Many of the water districts offer rebates for Weather Based Irrigation Controllers and Rachio is included

I replaced my hunter unit with one of these. No new wiring needed and no issues so far. You can tell it which zones are not used in the app so having only a few zones with a 12 zone unit is no problem.

I've got a Hunter pro c unit currently installed…..would you say it's easy to change to the Rachio?

Sorry for the dumb question here but I'm new to sprinkler systems. Does this include the actual sprinklers? It doesn't seem so, so how much do those usually run?

I had the pro C unit also and it was an easy replacement for me. I read the install instructions and just moved the wires to the Rachio as indicated and it works fine. I'm no expert by any means so your install might be setup differently.

This is the controller unit only, nothing else is included. Getting sprinklers installed properly from a landscaping company will cost thousands.
