Great deal and just paid more on another site unfortunately. Very good reviews and user reviews higher than critics, which is great sign.

Update: Played about an hour through first boss. Enjoying. Good ambient background music. Not overly difficult and actually death doesn't set back progress. I it seems to follow a pretty conventional 2D exploration and reminded me a bit of oddworld game. You unlock shortcuts as you progress (so far).

Almost bought this when it released, but...

Most of the reviews on Steam had like 15 minutes or less of game play before giving it a thumbs up. The reviews on those who actually played through it were mixed. Apparently it's an okay game, but not much to the combat or enemies that makes it more interesting as you progress.

I don't regret buying, but it is a bit bland after couple of hours. I like the side scroll exploration and has some good mechanics. You have spots that are like your bonfire for leveling up and restart from death, but almost no penalty for dying. It is setup as side scroll exploration where you go a ways until you unlock a beacon which gives a map, and eventually find a shortcut that loops back tores pawn point. Setting and tone are really good and will keep on going.

Sounds about right. That's what most of the reviews indicated. Good for awhile, but doesn't offer anything fresh to keep it as interesting. It seems like one of those games that will eventually end up in a Humble Bundle, so I might just wait it out and try it later. Smilie

This game is awesome if you're into Metroidvanias. It especially reminds me of the Ori games. This is absolutely worth the purchase.

I find Ori to be very platforming heavy vs most metroidvanias.. is that the case here? I got the sense that this game was more geared towards the combat being the main attraction

It's a little bit of both. But you will not be time-rushing platforming like you do in Ori.

That is good to know. So it doesn't elicit the miserable feeling you have in Returnal when you die on the first boss for the 15th time, and are stuck with nothing at restart(I know you have Ether, but hell you never know if you will find a resurrection chamber on your next run.)
