If you have a modern system with a chunk of ram you'll be fine. Smilie

4 year old acer with 8gb possibly slowest speed ddr4 ram. i'm thinking of upgrading to 16gb. not sure if better to buy same 8g and run in dual channel or buy faster 8x2 that i can reuse in the future and hope board can handle newer faster ram. this m.2 sits in sata slot so it's already slower than pcie.

Well, if you can get the same 8gb that you've been using for cheap, do it. If you can afford upgrading to 2×8gb that's faster and will work for reasonably priced...I'd do it ...but don't plan on using it in a new system as memory will have decreased in price and you'll probably want something else anyway. Not to mention mobo form factor changes.
