I have had Alexa since 2014 and there are at least one in every room of my house. But recently Amazon has been over the top with unwanted advertising on these devices, and I will not buy another. You can't even ask the time without being told, "By the way, would you like to hear my book recommendations?", etc.
Needs to be $10 or less to be a deal.

I've had some luck keeping them to a minimum with replying "No, and don't ask again" but I'm not sure if it makes any difference.

Alexa worked great for me until recently. I've now had to unplug and re plug a few of them that weren't playing music correctly

Same here I have every device they made and the ads and solicitation are annoying . Also I notice sometimes the devices become glitchy for no reason despite perfect wifi signal. That said in for a 1st gen show to replace a Spot.

That's great, thanks. Your username is concerning in regards to these devices, though 😬

My various Echoes are a big CF now. She doesn't listen anymore without us yelling, there's a delay in her "answering" (the acknowledgment chime/blue ring) which sometimes results in multiple yells, and the wrong rooms are often hearing the wake word first. I'm not sure if this is a result of newer ones (echo gen 2/3, dot gen 3, show 8) working worse than the older ones, or something Amazon did to screw up / make worse the capability to intelligently perceive which one you are closer to.

Take me back to original gen 1 times when she listened, played music, and the hack to get her to turn on hue lights worked and it was awesome

Thanks for the suggestions, but I'm already quite familiar with all the settings. I will try Brief mode again to see if that reduces unsolicited sales pitches in audio devices, but as far as I've ever been able to tell in the past, it just changes "OK" to a sound.

Hunches has nothing to do with the excessive chatter. Hunches doesn't do anything unless you enable one.

Turning off "Things to Try" in the app does not affect Show devices and does not disable unsolicited "By the way" chatter on audio devices. There is also a "Things to Try" in device settings on Show, but it has no toggle there .. just a list of more "Things to Try."

Just following up. Four hours after setting brief mode, I asked Alexa to set a timer. She did so, and then proceeded to tell me all about how she can set reminders from my calendar. So no, brief mode has nothing to do with the stopping the annoying Amazon self-promotion.,

Setting the devices to kids mode will stop them entirely - and create different problems.
